Making A Pincushion

I’ve been wanting to make pincushions to put in my Etsy shop.  I have plenty of supplies on hand to make these, but I’ve never made one before.   This guinea pig will be a Christmas gift for my daughter.  So here’s what I’ve got.

This base was on clearance at Home Goods and I have no idea what it is for.  I think it was in the bathroom section and I used it for paperclips when I worked my day job in New York.  Fabric {she likes anime} and some stuffing.

I used a salad/sandwich plate to make the circle and cut that out.  It probably should have been smaller than this and every fabric will be different depending on what you are using as your base.  Then, from what I’ve seen online, I did some basic stitches to be able to draw the circle closed.

I pulled the thread a little bit once I did that and it started to close up.  At this point I started to add the stuffing.  When I had enough in there, I pulled the thread all the way to close it up and sewed it back and forth a few times to tie it off.

I used hot glue to attach it to the base.   It looks a little demented here, but I’m hoping the trim will help with that.

I looked through my trims for something to add a little pizzazz to it!

A few pretty pins and it’s done!  I definitely need to practice a little bit more.  It looks like a  mini ottoman!  I’m looking forward to making more of these and I hope my daughter likes hers.  Any tips are welcome!

Cute idea. I made quite a few pin cushions a while back for gifts. I used small cups and pitchers for the base. Getting plenty of stuffing in the circle and then gathering the bottom is the tough part. Tiny gathers help keep the pouf smooth. I love your fabric, so cute. Hugs, Marty

It's cute! When I made mine, I just kept shoving the fabric in until it was as round as possible. I think the hot glue is the hardest part. Mine dries and then becomes unattached for some reason. =(

Maybe your circle is too large, Kathy. Instead of having what looks similar to a tall chef's hat, maybe what you're looking for is a smaller, fully stuffed pouf. But what do I know? I've only made the ones that looked like tomatoes eons ago! You know the ones- you can sometimes see them in the thrift stores. See ya tomorrow!

Hi Kathy,

Your daughter is going to love the pin cushion.
I like that it has a big poof.
