Drapery Switch For Fall

At our old house, I changed out drapes in many of the downstairs (or public) rooms with the seasons.  I haven’t really done that since we moved into our new place, but this year I decided to change the drapes up in our living room.

The picture above is how it has looked since we moved in three years ago.  I ordered these drapes from Ballard Designs.

From the living room at our old house, I have these what? plaid? black, white and tan/beige drapes (also from Ballard’s) that have been stored in the guest room closet until now.  I thought the pattern would give the room a warmer feel for the colder months.

I took some pictures Tuesday night when I switched them out, just for a change from the glaring sunlight that usually hits this room when I take pictures.

Yesterday I took some daylight shots.

What do you think?  As with most of the changes I make, after having lived with something for a long period of time, this will take me a little while to get used to.  So the jury is still out.  I do think, right off the bat, that I might prefer a buffalo check over this particular pattern.

But, I guess if I am going to wind up getting new curtains, I might just look for a black and white toile, which would be my number one choice at this point. We shall see!

Which would you choose if given the choice of the three?  Plaid, buffalo check or toile?  Or, should I just put the other ones back up?

I’ll give them two weeks and, after that, if I don’t care for it, I will put the others back up until I decide if I want to get new.  I think that’s giving it a fair try!

  1. I like these drapes. They allow the pattern on the chair to show off much better and seem to go with the room very nicely.

  2. I like what you have going on here - the original drapes for most of the year and the ones you have up now for winter months. The switch out really cozied up the room. Good for now and when the weather gets back to spring, you will probably want the original lighter ones again. Its fun to change things up. I do it a lot at my house.

  9. I dunno, Kathy. I really like these and think they add a real pop of interest to the room.

I also like that they compliment your chair that is there and it kind of makes that look more "important" in the room (if that makes sense).

I think that's a good choice you have going on...of course...if you twist my arm a bit I can ALWAYS embrace toile!;>) xo Diana

  12. Hi Kathy! I love the change too. I think I'd just keep these drapes as the contrast is so good. Love your entire room.

  13. I like the plaid drapes. As you said, they warm up the space for the cooler months. I love buffalo checks and toile, so I don't think you can go wrong either way. :)

  14. These plaid drapes are perfect for the cooler months. I like the way your chair and footstool show themselves much better against the plaid. Just my personal opinion. Creative Home Bliss...

  15. Hi Kathy, I love the new look with the drapes. They give an anchor to the room and give the chair it's prominence.
Of course you know I love toile but this is fabulous too and really cozy for the cooler months.
It is a beautiful room and I love your fan chandy!! Where did you find that added light works??

  16. Hi Kathy,
Your room is beautiful and the draperies really add warmth and coziness. However, I'm a lover of anything toile and I think black and white toile would be a lovely change as well.

  17. I love the new look too. Plaids are so pretty and a great look for the soon to be cooler weather. I wish I could look in my closet and find some drapes. I was at HL and was looking at a fall looking material and though about making some curtain for the main living area. But gosh I've got so many projects going on....I swear I just never caught up. Your room looks really pretty!

  18. Kathy...I just think this room is so beautiful...it can look great with anything. I'm not good with curtain choices...I waited and hemmed and hawded over the ones I have in my living room for weeks on end!! I will switch the ones in my bedroom and bath at the drop of a hat! Weird!! I can't wait to see what you decide on!

Thanks for a sweet, sweet comment on my being a grandmother. I LOVE little girls!! I have 5 sisters and 12 nieces!!! And MC's sister is having the baby girl next month so she can pass on all those clothes!! I thank you for being so sweet in your comments always! :)

  19. love the plaid, kathy! they do seem to make a great focal point as you look at the room. that said, if toile is your favorite, you should try the toile:)

  21. I like the checked! I liked the others too.. but I dont think you need to buy new ones. Go with the plaid for the colder months and the lighter ones for the winter months. hmmm.. now I feel like I should buy new drapes! LOL!
    have a great weekend

  22. Hard decision, buffalo checks or toile. I love them both. In the meantime, I hate to say it but I liked the other draperies better. Your room is beautiful and I love the light.

  23. Oh Kath, no I really really like them. They give you some warmth and "groundedness." If you went with a toile I am afraid you would have too many patterns fighting for one's eye's attention. These keep it still and admiring. Love them.

  24. I'm liking the plaid in this room. It has the appeal of a Buffalo plaid without being quite so harsh. And if your really want some Buffalo plaid it's easy enough to add in small doses. I'm thinking I would find that much Buffalo plaid over whelming the room and the toile too busy. But hey, that's me, and no one is beating a path to my door for decorating tips, so what do I know?

  25. I like your idea of giving it two weeks to get used to. These plaid drapes do give your room a more 'fall' look and warms it up. They look cozy near your fireplace. I'm sure you'll make a good decision, no matter what.
Thanks so much for wishing us luck at the Vintage Bazaar. We had a wonderful time! Wish you lived closer to come.
