Call me crazy, but I see the wall above the ledge and the back wall over the cabinets...as a Tuscan/or French countryside landscape...as if there are windows above your cabinets that open onto a vineyard and hills beyond.....either a painted mural (see if you can find an artist through a local college) or wallpaper (you can get some great ones online)..then on the ledge one grouping, i.e. a large vase, wine box and some greenery-to keep the dusting to a minimum, then you can change the greenery out for the seasons. That would look cool on your shelves. Maybe long, skinny, white rectangular plates with some dirt and grass seed? That may be hard to water way up high though. I wouldn't limit yourself to just faux greenery on top. I would decorate it like you would a mantle but with larger scale items to draw your eye up. Extra lighting will definitely help the overall look as well.
