Let's Get This Straight

BH&G

I saw a picture in the new issue of Decorating magazine that reminded me that I have wanted to do a post about hanging pictures in a grid. There is just something about the grid pattern that appeals to me ~ perhaps my sense of order, symmetry, or maybe just making a lot of nail holes ~ I'm not sure. Maybe a combination of all three!

Enjoy these inspiration pictures as you read along with my post.

My first attempt at this was putting these fern prints over my bed.

We redecorated our bedroom and wound up without a headboard. Since I wasn't sure if I wanted a wood or upholstered headboard, I hadn't gotten one and now that we have our house listed I might as well just wait. In the meantime, I wanted to put something on that wall and not just the typical one big picture to fill the space.

I got the prints, mats and bamboo style frames on eBay {from three different sellers}. I held onto them because I knew I wanted to do them in a grid pattern, but it was just a matter of where. Then my bedroom project came along!

I never did this type of picture hanging before, but we had a laser level and I decided to give it a shot. I really liked the way it turned out {straight} so much that I purchased egg prints, got frames for them, and hung those in a grid pattern in my downstairs entry. I've taken them down since we are selling, but I have plans to find a great place to hang them once we do move.

How do you like to hang your pictures?

  1. Kathy, My post for tomorrow is about 4 frames I just painted, assembled and hung over my daughter's bed. They can be tricky to hang. Beautiful pictures! As always...I love your inspiration!

  2. I LOVE the look of prints hanging in a grid pattern and plan to do it somewhere in my place... but I can't decide where! :-)
    Great inspiration photos, Kathy!!

  3. Thanks, Jane! I think in retrospect, I probably could have put them a bit closer. The egg prints I mention were bigger and they were closer together. Oh well, live and learn!

Thank you, Victoria! I wasn't sure either at first, but then it worked out well with my fern prints.

  4. Hi Kathy, I like the idea of hanging lots of frames together, but I pefer the look when there are lots of different sized frames, in different colours etc.

  5. I plan to do something very similar in my hallway. I have six botanical prints in white frames, but I have been debating about hanging them all in a straight line since its a hallway (with a little bit of space in between each of them). I'm not sure if that will look good or not, but I'm going to play around with it. Great post!

  6. It is a challenge to get them all straight but I do love the look.

  7. I saw pictures of that, too, Will, when I was looking for these.

Sounds good, Christine. Maybe use paper cut to size before making nail holes {I learned that from experience a long time ago!}.

It did take me longer than just hanging one or two pictures would, Tammy, but I like this way as a statement or focal wall. It's nice to do something different every once in awhile, too!

  8. I have a wall in the hallway of 9 pictures in a grid (3 x 3) from floor to ceiling that I LOVE. It was hubby's job to figure out how to hang them level and even :-D

Yes, of course, I have the thigh-high white leather boots -- I wear them to work every night. I mean day ;-)

  9. I am glad I swallowed my coffee before I read your comment, Kelly! Occasionally, I will ask my hubby for help hanging pictures, but if I think he's in a "how many nail holes are going to be in this wall" mood, I just do it myself when he's not home. A grid pattern falls into that "mood".

  10. Kathy- love your blog. Thanks fro stopping by mine, and then heading over to Julie's. We have a laser level that we haven't used yet... Our house is on the market too, so there isn't much on the walls. Hope it sells soon.

  11. I love the way they look but it's such a pain getting them straight and even all the way around, worth is though. :)

Did I miss something, where are you moving to?

  12. I have done this many times - years ago in a hallway with family photos in an abstract manner. Recently I've hung three photos in my bedroom in a triptych pattern, and up a staircase in an ascending row. So much fun to experiment!

I love all of your examples and the ones in your bedroom look lovely!

    Thanks for dropping by!

  13. Me too! I just adore this clean crisp look. Great pics Kathy!

Yes! I have added all the extra ribbon and stands to the signs I buy. I buy it at Michaels craft stores. They have a huge variety. I found some Fall ribbon I can't wait to start decorating with.

  14. Lee ~ Then you're going through the same thing I am! Good luck with yours and thanks for the compliment on my blog.

It does take a bit of time, Marie, but you're right it can be worth it! We're staying local ~ just downsizing and looking for lower taxes.

  15. I love an ascending look up a staircase, too, Donna! You're right, sometimes it's nice to try different ways of hanging pictures.

I thought I remembered you saying that in a post, Melissa; it's such a nice finishing touch!

  16. I agree it's a great way to create impact. I seriously need to figure out how to shop on ebay with all the deals everyone around me is constantly getting!

    Your bedroom looks great!

  17. Thank you, Maria! I haven't hit eBay in awhile, but if I am looking for something in particular and can't find it local, I always think of eBay. I really think you can find anything on there!
