Open House ~ A Public Service Announcement

I interrupt this blog to try and help publicize my open house on Sunday, May 1st from 1 to 2 p.m., where my realtor will be happy to show you around.   If you are looking for a family home on Long Island or know someone who is, I hope that you might point them in our direction.

Mount Sinai is a hamlet located in the Town of Brookhaven, County of Suffolk, State of New York.  It is toward the east end of Long Island and is on the north shore.  Mount Sinai has a wonderful school district {which is why we moved here}, but now my  kids are grown and we are looking to downsize.

Our neighborhood is family friendly and quiet.  It is an older development in the area having been surrounded by farm land for many years.  This development was built in the mid-1970’s. 

We have added onto our home over the years to suit our needs and I think the outside is deceiving as to what you will find inside.

Easter Tablescape

I am definitely no expert at setting a table, but I do enjoy making sure I have everything out that I think we will need for our meal.  I try to make it look as pretty as possible, even though, in a matter, of minutes, it is all in disarray! 

I had wanted to do a different kind of “basket” on each persons place setting, but it wasn’t working out for me, so I had to get creative with what I had.

These are those single serve rice containers.  I was saving them anyway for use with Mod Podge or paint so I had enough to use them for this.

I found the free downloadable place cards and the pieces I used to put together my “lollipops” at It’s Always A Party At The Parkers blog.  What a great blog for party ideas!

I have like a thousand popsicle sticks I keep in a tin container and every so often they come in handy for things like this. 

Some Easter grass, a plastic egg with some more chocolate in it, little chocolate bunnies and it’s done.  Just enough for the adult kids to get their candy fix.  Since my granddaughter is not old enough yet, she got a little gift instead of candy.

My dishes are Noritake Brookhollow and these are my “good” dishes that I picked out for my bridal registry 26 years ago.  I still love them and I’m sure it has something to do with the fact that I don’t use them all the time.  I admire them every time I do take them out of the hutch, though.

I guess I liked a scalloped edge even then!

Getting Ahead of Myself

On looking through my most recent issue of Traditional Home, there are either more accent chairs being pictured or I'm just noticing them more. 

Usually when I do that, it means that I will be keeping this in the back of my mind so that, should I come across something while out thrifting {or driving by someone's trash!}, I will be looking for something with potential that I can work on. 

I'd really love to get or find a Bergere chair at a good price.  Ballards has this one but it is over $900.00. 

I would be just as happy to find one of these accent chairs.

They can get quite pricey for a small chair that doesn't really invite comfort or sitting for any length of time.  Ballard Designs has their round back chair {comes with or without arms} and this little baby runs upwards of $400-500.00! 

So now that I’ve given myself some future food for thought, I need to stop looking ahead to what I would like to get at some point and get to work on the pieces that I have that need working on!  Do you ever get ahead of yourself that way?  Looking to the next project before you’ve even started the current one on the list?

When Husbands Enter The Project {Sigh}

My husband is all about “doing it the right way” when it comes to a project.   Which is a good thing and a bad thing.  The dresser I rescued has been looked at, walked around, talked about and prodded at.  It is time to get a move on.  I thought I was just waiting for the hubby to cut the wood I need for the shelves so I could get started.  We even have the wood already.

Friday he told me, “You can’t leave that top like that.  It has water damage.”  Which he then proceeded to point out.   He did offer to “pop” the top off and cut a new piece of wood for me and, while wonderful of him to offer for the piece he was only complaining about last week, it may take longer than I anticipated to get this project going.  I need to get the wood for the top and wait for him to be home long enough to cut it.  So, down to the bottom of the list it moves. {Edited to add: hubby works about 80 hours a week in retail as a manager and is based an hours drive from home – one way.  Hence getting him home long enough!}.

The child size table and chairs is now back to its rightful place on the list of projects.  I will work on this next then while I wait on the dresser’s fix.

A third project added to the list is this small round wood table.  Not an expensive piece by any means and it served a purpose in our great room as a side table, where hubby could plop a drink and whatever remote he was using at the moment. 

When I got my tray table from Willow House, I put it in its place and moved this little guy into my living room to take the place of a totally useless and small side table.  I want to paint this, too.  But, I want to make it a little more fun. 

So watch for these projects coming up.   I’m hoping that now I’ve talked about them at length, I can shake off this allergy lethargy and get going on them!

More Runners

New in my Etsy!  Blue and white stripe, with an ivory/cream ruffle; 91 inches long.

Red with white stripe; white ruffle; 72 inches long.

Another natural runner, also with the ivory/cream ruffle; 68 inches long.

I have one more I have to finish which is about 46-47 inches long and will be the blue with white stripe and white ruffle.   I’ll try to get that listed during the week.  Thanks for looking!

Nothing To Lose

I had a couple of things that didn’t work out for their intended projects.  I had a frame that I bought on clearance at Michael’s, that I covered the back in fabric and applied a vinyl on the glass.  I broke the glass when I was putting it back together.   The Nest stencil I just got recently thinking to put it on a tray, but that didn’t work out very well, so it has been waiting for another project.  I decided to pair these two up and see how they’d come out.  I figured I had nothing else to lose!

I just used regular craft paint to do the stencil.  I laid the frame over it to see how it would look.

I felt like there was a bit too much blank space on either side, so I taped off a small stripe, thinking along the lines of a faux grain sack look.

But, I had already rinsed out my stencil brush and cleaned up the paint.  So, I grabbed the next best thing that was close at hand!  Can you see it above?

Yes, a Sharpie!  I think it worked just as well.

Although, maybe I should have brought it in towards the middle a little more.  {That stripe to the right looks crooked, but I think I just have to adjust it in the frame better}.

Just need to find some place to put it now!

Candle Recall

I read about this candle recall today and thought I’d share for those who may not have seen it, especially since they are sold in Home Goods and Target, and I know a lot of us like to shop in those stores.

Chesapeake Bay Candle and Modern Light tealight candles are being recalled due to the clear plastic cup they are in melting or igniting.  Here is a link to the short story on it.

White Dishes

Thanks to my sister posting about a white bowl with a fleur de lis design she got a couple of weeks ago at Walmart, I headed over to the website to see what they had in dishes.   I saw the dishes that matched the bowl she showed.  This is the Country Crest collection in the Better Homes & Gardens line.

I left that website having placed an order for two sets of these.  The Medallion Wreath collection, also from the Better Homes & Gardens line.  At $34.96 for a 16-piece set, I couldn’t resist!

Not the fleur design you might have expected me to get, but I really liked this one better. Love the scalloped edge and wreath detail. 

Of course, I had to play with them and did a quickie table setting just to see how it all looked together!

I combined them with the white wood chargers I got from Pier 1 a couple of months ago.  They only had three left the day I went, so I bought all three.  I love them and will be replacing my everyday dishes with these.  I bought two sets.

Having the dishes ship to the store was free and I just picked them up there!    I think that these will mix in nicely with other dishes I already have, too.  I’m finding that’s the nice thing about having a set of white dishes.
