I read about a lot of bloggers finding furniture on Craig’s List to make over. I haven’t bought anything myself, but I recently sold a few pieces due to our move. You don’t always get what you are asking for, but sometimes it’s either accept it or get nothing!
I am, basically, satisfied with what I sold these pieces for and they are now out of the way.
Two years ago I sold my first pieces on Craig’s List. Two Queen Anne chairs I bought as a pair from JC Penney. When they sold, I then put my son’s old computer desk up and that sold as well. So far, each item I’ve listed has been sold.
While I am by no means an expert, I thought I’d tell you what I do when I list on Craig’s List.
- I take pictures of the furniture. I try for three so I can show different angles.
- I decide on what I want to get for the piece and add to it, knowing that negotiating will be going on.
- When I list the piece I put “asking $X.XX”, this way people know I am flexible.
- I measure the piece and list that information as well as the condition of the piece.
- I use the anonymous feature for email.
- If someone is coming to your house to see what you are selling, it is always a good idea to make sure someone else is at home with you.
Happy listing!
Kathy
Good advice. I just bought a desk and a dresser on Craigslist today. I am picking it up in the morning. Always makes me nervous picking it up, but I always have someone go with me. Good advice on the selling.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you had a good experience with Craigs List. While I have bought a few things, i have only listed one. I would have to give it mixed reviews as I received several inquiries from obvious scammers. Another option for safety is to meet somewhere in a public place (assuming the pieces you are selling can fir in your car) - like a convenience store, etc.
ReplyDeleteThose are the same things I do when I sell pieces Kathy..
ReplyDeleteits good you are moving things out of the way and making room for new stuff in your pretty condo..
Kathy, I somehow missed the post about your moving! What a fun way to clean and organize to your heart's content. I loved your comment on my post. I do think we are very similar. What a couple of MIL's! Loved your make-over rocker! Always, Elizabeth

Great info, Kathy! I've never sold anything on there, but would definitely consider it for my large items!! Thanks for the pointers!!
ReplyDeleteHave a delightful holiday weekend!!

Wow, it must feel great to downsize and get some cash to boot. You are so fortunate everything sold. I only listed once (so far) and the items didn't sell :(. I'm with you on photos and measurements. I made a free listing in July and got at least 30 inquiries--first come, first served on that one.
ReplyDeleteGood job and great advice. I have a few pieces that I want to sell, so this was helpful. Thanks. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteGreat tips Kathy! I have some things I need to sell, but I have never used Craig's list before..so perfect timing! Have a wonderful weekend! Angie xo
