My husband was going to throw this metal suitcase out!
I have no idea what it held, but except for a few dings here and there, it is clean inside and has all these great dividers, and the closures work. I grabbed it knowing I could make it over.
I have an idea to cover the inside with fabric and make fabric sleeves for these removable dividers.
I thought it would make a cute suitcase for my granddaughter. I was thinking of putting “Going to LaLa’s House” on the outside; and that’s where my ideas stop.
Could it be as simple as just spray painting it with some Heirloom White? I was looking for some ideas on Pinterest, but didn’t see anything that grabbed me. I searched under “suitcase makeovers”. Most of the vintage suitcases that come up are painted. So, I’m looking for ideas from your creative minds. Have at it!
I’ve got a follower giveaway going on that will end on August 4th! You can click here to enter!
P.S. Just wanted to add in again that my email address has changed. It is now kpassarette(at)yahoo(dot)com. I’ve been getting comments about emails being returned. I may be in your email contacts where my old one is coming up automatically for you, as mine does for me. So just check that it is showing my new email address now. Thanks!
I know what I would do because I saw a beautiful suitcase somewhere and it was all decoupaged with pretty papers...pick a theme and then go to town. Oh yeah, and the suitcase was spraypainted gold first, but since yours is silver you could do a silver base.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought is to spray paint it white.... and recover the inside with a pretty fabric. I think I'd use it for camera lenses or something fragile. You could stencil a "sign" of some kind on the outside. Use it in for crafts?
ReplyDelete:) Can't wait to see what you do, let us know.

What a fun piece. I have no ideas, but I know you will do something wonderful. Can't wait to see. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteDecoupage it like I did one of my carrying cases!!
ReplyDeleteXoxo
That looks just exactly like a tool box I have. Think that's what it was. It came with the tools in mine.

Oh WoW !!! I Love the suitcase :)
ReplyDeleteGeez, I took one look and thought,
decoupage!
Whatever you do will be wonderful, and your lucky lil' granddaughter will be delighted.

I think it would make the perfect overnite bag for your granddaughter. All the little compartments are so cute. And yes, spray painting it would be darling!
ReplyDeleteXO,

I didn't even look at the other comments so if this has already been mentioned just pay no attention to me. LOL. Anyway, I was thinking you could take the lid (top) off and then anchor the divided section to the wall to showcase knick knacks, or office or craft supplies if you decide to hang it in your office/craft room. I would leave the handle and all the hardware on it.
ReplyDeleteIf you were keeping it, I would say paint it and decoupage the tissue paper from old patterns on it, but since it's for your granddaughter, maybe just paint so it stays wipe-able.
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy,
ReplyDeleteI would paint it pink if it's for your granddaughter and maybe put an image on it of some sort. I'd wrap the handle in fabric and add a stream of ribbons or fabric and maybe a rosette.
Whatever you decide to do I know it will be fabulous!
hugs
Sissie
Looks like it held slides. I like the industrial look, but I do think it could use some embellishment. I'd do black letters, or numbers.
ReplyDeleteDecoupage the outside with travel postcards...I'll leave the inside to you..I remember a Dr. who had his briefcase covered with postcards from places he'd been...
ReplyDeleteI like Amy's idea Kathy! I know whatever you decide to do with it, it will be adorable. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Gail
ReplyDeleteI think it is perfect for a grandkid case. I love it. I would either spray paint it and stencil it or decoupage it...whatever you do it will be wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI tried to copy and paste a reply to you so we will see if it goes through. You old email addy still comes up when you leave comments. Did you change it in both spots on your profile page? xo Diana
Great save!!! I love the spray with heirloom white idea...Lord, that is all I use. You could do polka dots, with the round sponge stencil pouncers...I have no idea what they are called LOL! You could modge podge on some French graphics, cover with vintage wall paper...HUM,If you put suitcase into my blog search box, it might give you a spring board for ideas? OH, can't wait to see what you come up with!

Make it into an end table! You can pick up legs from a thrifted table and get to work! I've been wanting to do this with some old suitcases I have, but haven't gotten to it yet. Google it and you'll find some tutorials!

Some great ideas flowing here in your comments! Can't wait to see what you end up choosing to do.

I think it would be interesting if you hung it opened on the wall...the dividers make a great area for displaying items and the large open end would serve as a great shadow box...
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea, I can't wait to see what you do with it ( I love the (LALA HOUSE). Thanks for sharing .
ReplyDeleteYou know me, I would paint it in Black and White checks! Whatever you do it will be gorgeous! I say spray it white (you can always change it later) There are some great ideas form your readers!
ReplyDeleteOh this suitcase is so nice and has so many possibilities!!
ReplyDeletePainting seems to be the way to go. I have seen vintage suitcases painted and they really do look wonderful. Can't wait to see what you do!
ReplyDeleteafter looking at your post on vintage hat boxes, I think the pink and brown striped paper would be cute decopaged on like on the hat boxes. That would be cute for a little girl and you could put going to LaLa's house on it too.
