Contemplating the Front Entry/Foyer

The front entry/foyer area in our condo is pretty small.  I am lucky enough to get our hall tree in here, but that’s about it.

The area that is bothering me is the wall behind the door.  I put these three frames up as an attempt to not have it look so blank, but it’s just not doing it for me.

I’ve been looking on Pinterest for some ideas; keeping in mind that it is behind the door and I don’t want the door slamming into anything I put on that wall.  You can see how small it is by these pictures of my living room.

I am standing on the tile, just off the wood, taking these pictures.

This is what I have found and like, so far.

I have things already that I could probably use here.  I have this great clock that I had in the guest room closet after I replaced it with another clock in the home office.  The colors actually pick up on the colors in the door rug.

2013 02 19_0495

Without being able to hang them up to see, I tried laying everything out on the floor to get an idea.  I’m figuring the clock at the top, close to the ceiling.  It comes down to just above the middle picture that is there now.

2013 02 19_0499

You can see in the picture above how this larger version of the rug by the door has the colors of the clock in it.  Then putting these two framed pieces of Ballard wrapping paper under that, so that the clock would be centered.

2013 02 19_0501

I also have this large “K”, a Ballard purchase some time ago.  I was thinking this could either go underneath {where it would sit just about doorknob height} or off to the side and then I can build off these large pieces.  Fill in here and there like the inspiration pictures above.

So, I’d love to hear your opinion or possible suggestions on this plan.  I’m not looking to buy new things to do this, but to use what I’ve already got.  All these things pictured above are just sitting on the side with no current home.

  1. Great inspiration pictures! I think you are on the right track. I want to do something similar to the wall in my living room that the flat screen tv and console are on.

  4. Looks like you have a great start to the gallery wall. I'm kind of loving that stripe on your second inspiration picture- what do you think of doing a subtle stripe in your entryway?

  5. I think a gallery wall would look beautiful on that wall Kathy, and I love the pieces you started to group together!

  6. I love wall collages. My only suggestion is to take a look at your pictures and you will see that at eye level there is one something very predominant, and I am wondering if the clock needs to be that piece and then build from there. Hanging it high might not be the right spot. Just move things around and take a look and see. Hugs, Marty

  7. It's so nice that you already have pieces to work with and I like the arrangement you made on the floor. I think it's going to look fantastic with your living room, which I love!

  8. Love your pics. After looking around, I was thinking some painted effect on the entryway wall before you hang anything. Like very large tan swirls with black and red highlights on them to enhance the pieces to hang and coordinate with the rest of the home decor? Or a subtle large plaid in those colors?

  10. I love the idea of a gallery wall. I also love the inspiration photo with the striped wall behind the gallery wall. That might really add some interest to the space.

  11. kath,

That small a space wouldn't take much to put up nice wainscotting or batten and boarding to visually take up the space....the a ROW 1 2 3 of those three prints would work perfectly.

I don't think I would get too visually busy in that space, and as much as I LOVE that clock, even the door being slammed you run the risk of it falling and breaking.

I would keep it simple. But t hat's me, Little Miss Styreamlined Decorator talkin.

    Hugs.

  14. Your condo looks beautiful, Kathy. Since you have a lot of things hanging on the walls in your living room, what about trying one large item to hang which might make the entry space look larger. Maybe a large mirror or architectural shutters or other piece.
Sometimes it's hard to get it just right without trying different things. Anxious to see what you come up with.

  19. I like most of them except the last one and I think the piece of furniture in that one looks out of place to me, but furniture is not an issue for you. I love all the photo groupings and you are off to a great start.

  20. I'm with Denise on making paper templates of all the things you want to try, and then see what they look like together. Try different arrangements and take a quick snapshot, because a photograph gives a different perspective. Thank you for popping over to my blog!

  30. Hi Kathy,

Just keep in mind as you build your gallery wall, that whatever is hung in the middle - at eye level - should be the ONE THING YOU REALLY WANT TO FEATURE (similar to the P Monogram above your sofa). Then everything else should fill in around THAT.

Whatever you do, will be beautiful.

  32. Hi just found your fab blog. A small table with fold down sides wo,ile look good there. I had one and took flaps of , painted it cream , and it now sits at the end of my sofa..
If tree is electricity near by putting a light on the table would look good..
Maybe a seasonal vase of artificial flowers that could have a scented oil dotted on them.
Ok I am off to look some more round your blog. Mine is new and I am learning .

  33. Morning Kathy! Love your idea of using what you have. I think what you are showing will look beautiful; I would even add the existing trio of pictures coming down on the side of the arrangement above the heater to complete the wall. Looking forward to what you decide.

    Love your condo and ideas!
    Sincerely, Jeannette
