That should actually be bedrooms, plural. The bed that was in our master bedroom is now in the guest bedroom ~ headboard and all.
We got a new bed for the master bedroom and once I get everything in place I’ll be sharing that with you. Meanwhile, I need to find a white paint to repaint this headboard.
Old White {its present color} is not quite what I’m going for in this room and Pure White {both Annie Sloan chalk paints} is too white for what I want in here. I want white but something not white white, if that makes sense. Whatever color I decide on for the headboard will be the same color I use on the armoire that I’ve been wanting to paint in here for months now. So if you have any suggestions, my ears are open!
I also have a question for anyone who has painted over their chalk paint projects. Can you paint right over the piece when it has been waxed? Or, do I need to use something before painting? This piece was painted in Old White two years ago and waxed with clear and dark wax at that time {if it matters}. Thanks in advance for your suggestions and tips!

ReplyDeleteI have a small bottle of tinting paint in caramel. When I don't want to paint something real white, I just put some drops of the tinting paint in, until I'm satisfied. With the caramel color I get a creamy off white.

ReplyDeleteHi Kathy...I agree with Julia about adding a tint in a shade close to what you are envisioning. According to what I've read about others painting over chalk paint was that they had painted over the waxed product just like you were asking.

I'd look it up in my Annie Sloan books by my dil has them right now. I'm anxious to see what color you end up going with.

ReplyDeleteI love that headboard! I almost always use General Finishes milk paint in Snow White, but it's a white white. I always add a glaze to tone down the white. I don't know about painting over wax, though, seems like it would act like a resist. Experiment on a scrap piece of wood? Can't wait to see your new bed!

I had an accessory table that was milk paint with a wax coating. I didn't want the table, but my next door neighbor did. When she finished, the little table was beautiful. I commented on how pretty the finish was and she said, "well, after I got all that wax off..." and I don't remember what else she said!!

Good luck! p.s. when I was looking for a white paint color that was in my brain and not in the stores. I did my own chemistry with some paint leftovers around the house. Luckily, I scored. What's your stash like?
I believe I remember Amy from Maison Decor said you have to sand the wax before applying new paint. She is the expert in my opinion :) I always wait to wax until I am darn sure I am going to leave it--I change my mind a lot--especially when I use a color other than white :)

I wish I had your guest room as MY room! Can't help you with the painting over waxed finish question, I've not used chalk paint and/or a waxed finish on anything (too chicken). Regarding getting just the right white color you want though, this is what I would do: decide if you want a "warmer" white or a "cooler" white; Buy one quart of white white in whatever brand you like and the type of finish you like (flat, satin, semi-gloss, gloss, high gloss) and pick up some little bottles of crafting acrylic paints from your local hobby or craft store. Try a few drops of a warm color (beige, tan, pale pink) and try some cool colors (pale lavender, pale blue), each "tint" mixed into a tablespoon or two of the white white. Write down your formula (2 drops per 2 tablespoons, or however much of the "tint" you use to the white paint). It may take some experimenting but this may get you the white you are seeing in your mind's eye. Once you have the color, I believe you can take your sample to your local big box store where you buy your white white paint and they will spectral analyze (I'm sure that's not the right term but I think you know what I mean) the sample and mix the paint to a perfect match. I've seen it done and it's the coolest thing. Good luck!

ReplyDeleteWhite is tricky! I noticed the same about Annie Sloan's two whites. It doesn't have that perfect white even with wax or dark wax. I suppose one could mix, but the paint is expensive and I am not an expert.
