While the weather can’t seem to make up its mind here, I am starting to think about how I want to add some flowers into our landscape this year. I have two urns {one by our garage door and one by the front door} that I like to change up each year.
Our first year here I used a fern.
I’ve been pinning some inspiration and my daughter has been sending me pins of some that she comes across, too. So far, these are my favorites. This one below is in a window box, but could easily be adapted to a container.
I usually use colored and interesting foliage over flowers to keep bees and wasps away from the doors. This way there is less of a chance of them making their way into the house. I’m finding it hard to resist this one with hydrangeas though.
I usually try to use something full, something trailing and something tall. Geraniums might be a good flower to use; I love them in pink.
I hadn’t thought of using ornamental grass in a container, but I like it as the “something tall” for a different look.
I do love a full look though and I did get that with coleus.
I love using Potato Vine and/or Creeping Jenny as my trailing plants.

I can’t wait to start planting!

Those are all great ideas, Kathy. I can't wait to get going outside-although we do not do outside planters until after Memorial Day...sad....I LOVE that window box. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteLove the container inspirations you have posted. I cannot wait to get in our yard and start working. Last year was horrible time for our back yard. Sewer pipes had to be installed.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of beautiful inspiration!
ReplyDeleteLong Island has def decided it is winter, 5 inches of snow today. I was hoping my dusty miller would survive, I planted 3 flats of it last year, but I don't know. It was buried under ice for so long. I am worried about my clematis too!
ReplyDeleteI don't do too much container gardening, it makes more work for me. I have to water it all! The gardens get water from the irrigation system, but the containers, it's all me! :)
Hi Kathy, great containers you share. I love to container garden too and do a lot of it here. We've had several warm days and I have had fun playing in the garden.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week.
Hugs
Once it's warm enough I do the same thing every year: tall spike in the middle, inpatiens for color and trailing vinca vine. Gives varying height, texture and color. Love the hydrangea example! Our front porch is too sunny for them:( xoKathleen
ReplyDeleteThey are all beautiful. I am looking forward to filling my containers too!
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas..Saw some on Pinterest..Can't wait to start..I saw a huge fern at Lowes today for only 13.00..so tempted..Too cold..
ReplyDeletegoogle must have lost my comment:)
ReplyDeletelove them all but especially the window box sample..
I cant wait to plant a few flowers in my containers.
I love hydrangeas, didn't know you could grow them in a container. We had 70 degree weather today, and I couldn't resist buying a few plants at Lowe's today. I am terrible with plants, though, so we'll see how long the pot of flowers by the front door survives.
ReplyDeleteLove the hydrangeas! We have to keep our planting to a minimum this year with the drought although right now we are having RAIN (and even tornadoes, go figure?!?!) and my little veggie in a pallet garden is loving it!!

Lovely examples! I needed some ideas. I really appreciate the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThese are great inspiration. I always want to put all the plants in my pots and urns. John always bugs me and says that it is too many and it will be overcrowded. Then I see all these and it is so pretty. What to do with him, I don't know. I may have to fight harder this year, if we have time, LOL!

Awesome inspirational pics, Kathy! I'm partial to the Potato Vine and/or Creeping Jenny as trailing plants (especially mixed with coleus) and look forward to being able to getting our black urns spruced up, too! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to garden too. Those are all great inspirational pictures.
ReplyDeleteDreaming of flower pots and blooms! Now if Mother Nature would only turn off that snow-making-machine...

Those are all pretty! The bees don't really seem to bother my hydrangeas so you may be able to put those near the door. I also like coleus because it comes in some many different colors.
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy! Oh, I love all of these pretty containers and their flowers! My thumb has turned a little brown in my olden years. :) Oh, thank you for the sweet story about your hubby's daddy's scale!
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia;)
Really pretty pictures and ideas. Of course, I don't do much gardening but I do pick out the plants and then he plants them. =)

Ooh-Ooh-Ooh....that hydrangea planter is to die for. I have to pin that one!
