Hydrangea Urn

SONY DSC

Finally, the time arrived that I could plant the Hydrangeas I had bought about a month ago.  I had them in the house until now, bringing them outside on the nicer days and in again at night.

You might remember I shared this picture from Pinterest on some container inspiration.  You can find that post here with sources. This was a window box but the idea is easily transferred over to a pot or urn.

Would be pretty in a container, too. Charleston window box: Blue Hydrangea, Purple Oxalis, Silver Lamium, English Ivy

I decided to put the blue hydrangea in the urn by the front door.  It will get some afternoon shade here.

I picked up some Creeping Jenny, English Ivy, and Sweet Potato Vine to trail or “spill” over the urn rim.  This is early days yet and I’m expecting this to fill in and drape a bit more.

I planted the two purple and white ones in the front bed.  Since they are small, they look a little lost right now.  Once I get some of my other plantings in, I’ll be sure and share the whole look.  These posts are helpful to me, too, because it helps me see what works from year to year.

I’ll have to remember to take some pictures a couple of months from now, too, to see how far things have come along.  Are you trying new plantings this year?

  2. Very pretty, Kathy. Hydrangeas are one of my favorites. I planted something in a teacup planter this week, not even sure what it is, but it has purple flowers. Richard laughed at me when I told him the plant-killer was buying another plant.

  4. That is a pretty combo of color and shapes.
Thank you for all your sweet comments and to answer your question....although the cottage white did look pretty in the photos the revere pewter just added a little more warmth for me.We also used revere pewter in the kitchen with cloud white trim and I love it there too. It does look clean and fresh. There are so many choices now that it seems to complicate the decision but I am sure it will look nice no matter which color you choose!

  6. The hydrangea looks so pretty in the urn! I love hydrangeas and had them as the bouquets that my bridesmaids carried in my wedding. Such an elegant flower! I don't know a lot about flowers and plants so when I see people putting together different plants and flowers I'm always so impressed! I'm planting an organic veggie garden in our backyard this year! It's a pretty big space all tilled out now. I'm thinking I'll be feeding the whole neighborhood this summer. Hope you're doing well! ~ Jamie

  9. Remember to pour your excess tea and coffee - and used tea leaves and coffee grounds on the base of your hydrangeas. They thrive on the acids. Also, water them twice a day - they will do beautifully, they are so gorgeous, Kathy!

  16. Your urn is going to be full and lush in no time ~ so pretty. Sometimes it amazes me how fast things grow at this time of the year. We have three hydrangea bushes in front of our house - I'm going to try Michele's tip about the coffee grounds (thanks Michele)!

  17. Kathy, I love that urn it is so pretty and has many of my favorites inside. Love creeping jenny. I can't wait to get to the point of the yard. We may just concentrate on the yard and not do too much annual planting this year.
