On Display {Apothecary Jars}

What is it about apothecary jars? Is it that they are glass and you can see what's inside? Is it the variety of shapes and sizes? Is it the items inside ~ the colors, the shapes? I'm not really sure what the appeal is, but apothecary jars are all over in home decor!

They can be used to hold anything from candy to soap, and who knew detergent could look so good!

I have found mine at Home Goods and Michaels, but there are so many stores that have them ~ Pottery Barn, JC Penney, Target, and Walmart to name a few.

Just when I thought I was done with this post, I found these:

Sarah at Thrifty Decor Chick

I use them when decorating in clients' homes, home staging and in my own home. Here are a few I have on display at the moment. This one below is in my master bathroom. I used everything except the plastic holder that came with a package of egg soaps ~ right down to the ribbon fastened around the apothecary's lid.

Here's another set waiting for a similar jar to the one above {just a tad bit smaller} that I just washed out. If you are interested they are available from The Feathered Nest here.

Here's the niche by my tub where they will both be placed.

This is my "when life hands you lemons make lemonade" apothecary jar, with the faux lemon bushes I bought from Michaels and then proceeded to take apart {the bushes were less expensive than individual or the bag of larger loose lemons they had}. I threw the leaves and everything in there.

And this is probably the smallest one I have. I bought a bag of Fall filler, put what I could fit in there and used the raffia that was tied around the bag opening on the lid. The few that didn't fit I just put around the base.

This picture gives you an idea of the size of it.

I'm linking this post up to Julia's last Hooked on Fridays feature over at Hooked on Houses. Thanks for hosting, Julia! I only started joining in the past few weeks, but I have enjoyed it!

Today is the last day of our Paintings in Progress Giveaway of Julie Beck's "Skeleton Keys"!

The apothecary jars are so beautiful. I love what you've done with them, so creative yet so elegant in appearance. I have a few in my kitchen and have filled them with pretzels and tri-colored pasta. I like your ideas much better.

  6. Thank you, Dawn! I love them! I was so excited when the package arrived {I love the notebook too}. You're right, I think everything does look nicer behind glass.

Hi Linda! Thanks! I would say the options of what to put in them are endless.

Hi Tracy and thank you! Welcome aboard! Such a pretty way to store things or display them.

  7. Hi Barbara ~ The shredding in my egg soap apothecary came with the packaging. One jar I didn't show has a little nest with eggs in it {that I put away for Halloween decor}, but I found the little nest and eggs at Michael's craft store. I think you could probably find the shredding there and some stores have it near their gift wrap section.

  8. Thank you, Liz! I probably should change out the one with the lemons to something else more Fall-like. Maybe little pumpkins from the dollar store? Great way to make pretzels look good! : )

  10. Oh you're so right. What is it about jars that is so appealing? I love mason jars just as much! But I couldn't concentrate after I saw your first picture....three washers?! Who is this person and how do I meet her?

I have tried to get my husband to get me a second washer for years and he thinks I am crazy. But with nine kids...I need it! And that look so pretty.

    Thanks for sharing! Lisa~ www.livingmybestlifeii-lisa.blogspot.com

  19. Thank you, Lou Cinda! So glad you came by! The soaps are just great! The whole packaging is great ~ I wanted to display them just as they were, but I already emptied the jars I had to get ready for the eggs.

Rhonda, you're very kind and I thank you for that compliment! You did a beautiful job in that room and I would certainly pursue it. I left another comment for you on your post.

  20. I seriously need to look out for (and buy!) some of these jars - I think it's the shape that makes them so wonderful.
I like the small one you did, with the items that didn't fit simply placed next to the jar.

  21. Hi Kathy...love your apothecary jars...you have a beautiful collection. Love all the ideas you posted for things to display! :-)

P.S. The Frenchy pink notebook came from Office Max about 3-4 months ago...they may still have them. :-) It's fabric covered...which I really like. :-)

  22. Some of them do have a really nice shape. I thought the small one I got was cute, but I do like all the sizes. I would really need to have something in mind to fill those really big ones, though!

Thanks, Susan! I'm finding that you can put just about anything in one of these jars. I'll have to see if they still have the notebook ~ that's just my style! Thanks for letting me know.

  25. Those robin's egg blue soaps in the jar are my favorite....and I like the mini orange pumpkins and gourds too. Really pretty.

  26. I love apothecary jars too...I had a bazillion of them for my daughter's wedding in June as we made a candy bar, filling them with candy that matched her wedding colors (robins egg blue, chocolate brown and taupe). I sold all of them, and I'm kicking myself now! I'm starting to pick up a few here and there to start my collection again. (I make handmade soap, and I am SOOO gonna make some egg soaps like you displayed!)
    peace.

  27. Thanks, Lisa! I really love the egg soaps, too. I look at them every morning now!

I'm finding them everywhere, Cindy, so I'm sure you'll be able to replenish soon! Great idea to do a candy bar. That is so neat that you make soap ~ I'd love to see the finished product!
