I had a funny conversation with my Mom the weekend before Christmas. Apparently, she and my Dad were changing out the window treatments for some heavier ones. She had bought new drapes for their guest bedroom/computer room and they were 95” long. She had my Dad mount the rod above the window {somewhere in between the top of the window and the ceiling}. I have told her for years about mounting the hardware and drapery higher than window top level, and I do it in my own home.
She was so excited to tell me I was right! It does look different; it does look better; and she loves it! She couldn’t stop going by the room and peeking in at it.
So, my Mom wanted me to tell you that I was right ~ you should mount your drapery hardware and drapes higher than the actual window ~ it makes quite a difference. I guess it’s a good thing I know what I’m talking about! ; )

you are so right! Hanging curtains the right height makes a tremendous difference.
ReplyDeleteKathy,
ReplyDeleteIsn't it great when we can teach our mothers something? I am new to the blogging world and just discovered yours. I enjoyed reading your posts and will be returning for more inspiration and know how!
Happy New Year.

Oh, it is so nice to be told you are right! And by your mom?! I love rods mounted high above the windows...one look I've never been able to make sense of is hardware mounted on the window frame itself, unless made necessary.

I'm in total agreement with you on that one - and it sounds like your mom is too! Congrats to mom on getting new window treatments. :-)
ReplyDeleteI agree too! I does make a huge difference!
ReplyDeleteSo with you on this one....
ReplyDeleteYou are right, Kathy! I'm not really a drapery person . . . more of a valance/cornice type, but I do that with my window treatments as well. I get 'em waayyy up there. Especially in a house with standard height ceilings like ours, it helps create an illusion of height just a bit, I think.
ReplyDeleteGood tip!
Yes, I agree I always hang them high. It's actually hard to find pre-made curtains that are longer than the standard 86" though so I understand why so many people hang them level with their windows.

Ooooohhhh! Very pretty and great idea Kathy! Tell your Mom thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking for new drapes for the living room. I'll keep this in mind. :)
It so funny when the light bulb turns on especially after it is something you have been saying over and over! Hang 'em High is good advice. Give a much more sophisticated look to a window and room. Good advice!
ReplyDeleteI have done this in some of my rooms, but not all of them. You know how it is, you leave the rods up forever once you put them up 'cause you don't want to change them!
ReplyDeleteYay for Mom getting on the hang em high train !
ReplyDeleteWell Kathy, you know the rule: If mom just now realized it then hanging the rods high is now acceptable and chic! haha. I agree with you and I think your mom sounds great! Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteI hang those puppies at the ceiling too girl!! For some reason I did not do that in my bedroom! Duh!! And a month or so ago I got some new panels and hung them at the ceiling level and they looked so much better! I do not EVEN know what I was thinkin' when I hung them the first time!
ReplyDeleteHave a great day~
