I came across this blog post by Julie at Less Than Perfect Life of Bliss on making a quick topiary. I like quick. Even better, I like cheap! I printed out Julie’s post and added it to my “Blog Projects” binder. Here is how Julie’s turned out.
Isn’t it so neat and pretty? Mine are not so neat and pretty. I don’t feel too bad though, because I made them out of wadded up grocery store circulars! So I’ll just redo them when they start to bother me enough.
When I read Julie’s post, I had been frustrated with myself {again} for leaving Michaels my last trip there and forgetting to get styrofoam balls {again}. I thought using wadded up paper was a great idea! I already had the urns and the moss, and I have paper!
I did my little urn with just a moss ball using reindeer moss, but used the same technique of wadding up some circulars, taping them and then using hot glue to apply the moss.
For the larger of the two urns, I used a stick from my yard and I made a bigger ball of paper. I used this other moss {the messy moss} and after burning my fingers several times, I gave it a little haircut and got this.
This one I just made into a moss ball for this very small urn and sat it on top.
Yeah, I know. They won’t be sitting out long. I wish I could say I was drunk when I did them. Serves me right for forgetting to get proper round styrofoam balls when I’m at Michaels.
Kathy, these are cool!! And you recylced too!! Totally creative!!!

I think they look good! Very natural! I am FOREVER going to Hobby Lobby and getting everything I need for something EXCEPT the main thing!
ReplyDeleteImprovising!! That is how we roll!!

Hi Kathy,
ReplyDeleteI love topiaries, reusing materials, clever and affordable ideas so this is definitely a winner. Enjoy!
Cathy
I love what you did because they are not perfectly round they look so much more artistic and creative, love that...I also want to thank you so much for always writing such nice things on my blog, I always appreciate your encouragement and kind words, I always love to see your comments, thanks
ReplyDeleteI actually rather like that yours are asymmetric. They feel more natural to me.
ReplyDeleteI think they look wonderful. I really want to make some. So I am going to give this a try. Thanks for the tutorial. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh when you said you wish you could say you were drunk! I've had quite a few projects like that. Thanks for stopping by my casual beach dinner and your sweet comments.
ReplyDeleteKathy! So sorry your topiaries didn't turn out like you expected, but I still like them! I had to laugh when I saw your little white urn you used because I just bought that same one at Marshalls the other day to support my topiary habit! I just made a new one & will post about it next week. Maybe you'll like that one better... Thanks for visiting my blog!
ReplyDeleteLOL! Yes there is no styrofoam but kudos to you for being creative and thinking outside the styrofoam, I mean box!
ReplyDeleteToo funny! All things considered I think they look great. I admire your resourcefulness.
ReplyDeleteAt least you were inventive enough to use crumbled up paper. I'd have driven back to Michael's then they would've been out..
ReplyDeleteYours look great.
Kathy, your cracking me up! I love how you show us ~just like me~ stuff:) I can't tell you how many xmas decor items I tried without the proper styrofoam! I'm pretty sure I remeber my husband coming home and saying...'um, were you drunk?' lol:)
ReplyDeleteneat idea, going into my file too!
Kathy,
ReplyDeleteYou are too funny girl. In a way they look much more natural because nothing in nature is perfectly round. They look pretty good.
hugs

Wonderful job, it looks great!!!

My two favorite things . . . quick and cheap! LOL I think they turned out great, Kathy! Very organic and natural looking. I'll definitely remember this trick.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
I like them! But I must say I'm having the same week. I've ditched a few not so lovely projects this week. I think I'm wayyyyy off this week. It happens. =(
ReplyDeleteNow that's a great idea!! I'm going to have to try out this project.
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome idea!!!
ReplyDeleteHa ha Kathy, it's called artistic license or creativeness outside the box.... okay, I made that one up, but they look fabulous!!!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Margaret B
Out of paper? I love it! They look more natural and love how you "re-used"! I will have to give this a shot.

Now thats being creative..Love the newspaper idea. I really like how the second moss ball turned out. I think it looks great!
ReplyDelete~Hi Kathy~
ReplyDeleteI love all your great project ideas and think they turned out super cute. =)
Also, I want to thank you so much for your advice on my kitchen. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet, as I have a little time. If I attempt anything it won't be until the kids are out of school for summer break. Thanks for everything! =) ~Liz
The fact that you would even try them without styrofoam balls is what is sooo impressive to me. You are on a whole 'nother level than most. :))) Oh and of course they look adorable.
ReplyDeleteVery clever idea. I've seen the moss balls a lot this spring so the look is definitely very trendy.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever heard of Rub 'n Buff? My company markets this product. It's made from carnuba wax, and comes in many colors, the most popular being silver and gold leaf. I'd like to send you samples if you want to try it on one of your projects and blog about it. I've seen it used on chandeliers, craft projects, frames, furniture - lots of uses.
Hi Amaco ~ Thanks for visiting my blog and commenting! Having no other way to contact you, I will comment here and hope you come back. I absolutely would love samples! I tried this product for the first time this year, I believe it was the antique gold, and I loved it.
ReplyDeleteHi there!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, no, I can't set up a schedule as the work is transcribing. Some are quick turnarounds, others not, various lenghts. I've been typing since Tuesday and will continue through Saturday . . .BUT then next week who knows what I'll get . . . before it was a set amount and I could plan accordingly. Ah, such is life!!

Love this idea Kathy. I think you did great. Now I'm gonna have to try it to..
ReplyDeleteHappy Spring

I think the reused paper is a great idea, and I would never have noticed the difference myself! I love these topiaries, but have not loved the idea of buying styrofoam balls just to use for them! I may give your version a try, too! Thanks for visiting my sight.
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy! I found your blog through Carla at her CosmoGirl's Emporium blog. I kept seeing your picture on each post I commented on and thought, 'hmmmm...we must have something in common' and hopped on over and LOVE your style! You and I have alot of the same taste in decor' and I am a huge fan of frugal finds!! Although you wouldn't know much from my little blog as I just started it last week and have alot of pictures to add and designing to do. I would love for you to come by one day in the future to see it though.. craftycoutureboutique. It looks like you are quite a pro at decorating, way to go! I will definitely have to come to you with some ??'s when stumped on decorating ideas. I would love to add you to the my favorite blog list if that is okay with you. Take care and have a wonderful weekend! ~ Jamie
ReplyDeleteKathy do you think I could display these in an outdoor covered area?
ReplyDeleteSweet wishes,
Sara
