Topiaries Out Of Paper

I came across this blog post by Julie at Less Than Perfect Life of Bliss on making a quick topiary.  I like quick.  Even better, I like cheap!  I printed out Julie’s post and added it to my “Blog Projects” binder.  Here is how Julie’s turned out.

Isn’t it so neat and pretty?  Mine are not so neat and pretty.  I don’t feel too bad though, because I made them out of wadded up grocery store circulars!  So I’ll just redo them when they start to bother me enough.

When I read Julie’s post, I had been frustrated with myself {again} for leaving Michaels my last trip there and forgetting to get styrofoam balls {again}.  I thought using wadded up paper was a great idea!  I already had the urns and the moss, and I have paper!

I did my little urn with just a moss ball using reindeer moss, but used the same technique of wadding up some circulars, taping them and then using hot glue to apply the moss.

For the larger of the two urns, I used a stick from my yard and I made a bigger ball of paper.  I used this other moss {the messy moss} and after burning my fingers several times, I gave it a little haircut and got this.

This one I just made into a moss ball for this very small urn and sat it on top.

Yeah, I know.  They won’t be sitting out long.  I wish I could say I was drunk when I did them.  Serves me right for forgetting to get proper round styrofoam balls when I’m at Michaels.

  8. Kathy! So sorry your topiaries didn't turn out like you expected, but I still like them! I had to laugh when I saw your little white urn you used because I just bought that same one at Marshalls the other day to support my topiary habit! I just made a new one & will post about it next week. Maybe you'll like that one better... Thanks for visiting my blog!

  11. At least you were inventive enough to use crumbled up paper. I'd have driven back to Michael's then they would've been out..
    Yours look great.

  13. Kathy,
You are too funny girl. In a way they look much more natural because nothing in nature is perfectly round. They look pretty good.

  20. ~Hi Kathy~

I love all your great project ideas and think they turned out super cute. =)

Also, I want to thank you so much for your advice on my kitchen. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet, as I have a little time. If I attempt anything it won't be until the kids are out of school for summer break. Thanks for everything! =) ~Liz

  21. The fact that you would even try them without styrofoam balls is what is sooo impressive to me. You are on a whole 'nother level than most. :))) Oh and of course they look adorable.

  22. Very clever idea. I've seen the moss balls a lot this spring so the look is definitely very trendy.

Have you ever heard of Rub 'n Buff? My company markets this product. It's made from carnuba wax, and comes in many colors, the most popular being silver and gold leaf. I'd like to send you samples if you want to try it on one of your projects and blog about it. I've seen it used on chandeliers, craft projects, frames, furniture - lots of uses.

  23. Hi Amaco ~ Thanks for visiting my blog and commenting! Having no other way to contact you, I will comment here and hope you come back. I absolutely would love samples! I tried this product for the first time this year, I believe it was the antique gold, and I loved it.

  24. Hi there!

Unfortunately, no, I can't set up a schedule as the work is transcribing. Some are quick turnarounds, others not, various lenghts. I've been typing since Tuesday and will continue through Saturday . . .BUT then next week who knows what I'll get . . . before it was a set amount and I could plan accordingly. Ah, such is life!!

  26. I think the reused paper is a great idea, and I would never have noticed the difference myself! I love these topiaries, but have not loved the idea of buying styrofoam balls just to use for them! I may give your version a try, too! Thanks for visiting my sight.

You and I have alot of the same taste in decor' and I am a huge fan of frugal finds!! Although you wouldn't know much from my little blog as I just started it last week and have alot of pictures to add and designing to do. I would love for you to come by one day in the future to see it though.. craftycoutureboutique. It looks like you are quite a pro at decorating, way to go! I will definitely have to come to you with some ??'s when stumped on decorating ideas. I would love to add you to the my favorite blog list if that is okay with you.
