I’ve been wanting to try this project for several months now. Boot socks! So pretty with the lace peeking up over your boots. Here is one I saw on Pinterest.
Just make sure you stretch these puppies ~ the cuff end ~ otherwise it won’t make it over your calf and all the lace you sewed on will pop its thread. Just sayin’.
At my recent trip to Goodwill, I decided to pick up two sweaters and make boot socks. I already cut the sleeves off here, but you can see I used a cardigan and a turtleneck. One set is going to be a gift for my daughter. Having never made these before the second sweater was for the guinea pig version which would be for me.
I started this at night so there are not a lot of pictures of the process. Just cut the sleeve off where it meets the shoulder. I’d wait and make the length adjustments after you’re done and have tried it on. Stretch out that cuff! You can always pull it on your leg, too, to make sure it will fit up over your knee.
You could probably attach your lace or other trim with fabric glue, although I sewed mine on {stretching the cuff of the sweater out as I sewed the lace around it}. You can come up with different variations, as the blog I linked above details. Add buttons, have some lace come down the top a little bit; you are only limited by your imagination in dressing these up. I’m going to let my daughter choose if she wants some buttons added, like these options.
This is a versatile enough project so that if you don’t want the sweater bulk added to your socks and pants inside the boot, you can cut them to adjust the length. Maybe even just have them where they appear to go all the way down your boot, but they are just up at the top to look pretty.
I’ve also seen them worn a few ways. Inside the boot.
Out of the boot but scrunched up.
And over the outside of the boot.
And if you are not into boot socks, you could always cut them down a bit and make them wrist or arm warmers. You can also use socks to make the wrist warmers. Here is one I pinned on Pinterest.
Here is how my boot socks look on my wrist if I wanted to go that route. Don’t you love the lace? This may be next. Wouldn’t a pair of each make a great gift as a set!
I hope it doesn’t sound difficult. It actually is quite a quick project ~ it took me about an hour from start to finish to do the two pairs. Plus, it’s inexpensive. I believe the sweaters were $3.49 each at Goodwill and I already had the lace. If you have sweaters you are getting rid of, the cost would be even less!
I plan on making more and will be on the lookout for more lace and trims to use. Oh, and I think I need a new pair of boots!
