I was not going to participate in Where Bloggers Create II at My Desert Cottage, because I don’t have an actual room. However, a moving of my craft table in the garage {a spot I cleaned up and took over from my hubby, who wasn’t using it except to put more and more crap on it}, made me change my mind. After all, not everyone is going to have a separate room/studio/office, so I figured “why not?”.
A secondary refrigerator moved into the garage and took the spot where I have been crafting and putting projects together for the past 6-8 months. So after nixing my idea of moving it under these two shelves, hubby changed his mind and moved it under these two shelves {insert eye roll}. Here are a couple of before shots and lots of pictures are below.
I had already had intentions of fixing up the little area ~ wall and all ~ where I was previously, to make it a little prettier for when I’m in there, and I was thrilled to get the shelves to use for storing some supplies right above the table. A recent order from Hobby Lobby online got me a roll of black and white Harlequin wrapping paper and a roll of pink and black French wrapping paper. Ooh la la!
I started by doing the harlequin paper at the top and I just went the width of these metal shelves. I then did the French paper in the middle and finished up with the harlequin paper at the bottom part of the wall. I added some pink ribbon on the front edge of the shelves.
Here’s a full view of my area. This gives you a little perspective of just how small a spot I have. To the right is the door that leads into the house {kitchen, laundry, exercise room}. My craft closet is in the exercise room, so it is a few steps away if I need to grab something out of my supplies.
Here are some close-ups of the items I utilize when I’m crafting or working on projects here. Some of these may look familiar as these were actually some of the first projects I did when I rediscovered my crafting side last year. You can see my cookie sheet magnetic board.
This was a jewelry box I found at Goodwill ~ brand new ~ from Target {who has it for $14.99 and I got it for $4.99). It had a “Love” word on it and I took it off and added the key hole. I also added some scrapbook paper behind the glass, which is where a picture was intended to go.
My recycled Vanity Fair napkin holder, which now holds some small packages of rub-ons, stickers, and small tags. Some ribbons I grabbed from the baby shower that needs to be put away.
The previously gold gift basket that had a screen-type of trim around it, now painted brown and holding some of my larger embellishments and adornments.
My scissor holder ceramic bunny, which I love. This actually had a small thing of string that originally came with it and the string could feed through the mouth area and the scissors would sit on the bunny face as glasses. The string is gone, but sometimes a small pair of scissors comes in handy so I hung him up out here.
I’ve got tags in the harlequin box, which I need to change out the label to read “tags”, and the purple storage container holds larger stickers, scrap card stock and other larger items that don’t fit in the other things. I’d like to get something a little more in keeping with the area, but for now it works.
Other random pictures of items I feel I like to have in easy to reach areas. Items I don’t use as often or that are just decorative I’ve put on the very top shelf.
Gotta do something about this open bottom portion. Some of that underneath is hubby’s crap tools and junk stuff.
That’s a little better! Much neater now.
This light was already attached to the table and it has definitely come in handy when I need light close-up on something.
After seeing the first pictures I took, I had to get rid of that blue plastic cup holding pens, pencils, scissors and such. I covered a sauce can that was in the recycling with some scrap paper, ribbon and stamped muslin.
I recently added this extra tray I had gotten from the Dollar Tree. It looks like it will come in handy to hold little items so that they don’t roll off the table. I also like to keep a pad of paper close by so I can easily write down supplies I need to get or replenish.
Hubby wants to know when I’m doing the rest of the garage!
Thanks for visiting where I create. I wish I had a dedicated room for all this {and my decorating business}, but sometimes you gotta make do with what you’ve got! Don’t forget to check out everyone else’s space over at My Desert Cottage.
Kathy, I love your special creative space! You have done a wonderful job of making it YOU and so special and I'm so glad you decided to particiapte!
ReplyDeleteI have a small spot in the garage much the same size as yours where my kiln is and you've inspired me to spruce it up!!!
NOW, being the sassy gal that I am, turn that exercise room into YOUR room and put the exercise equipment in the garage, LOL, that's where ours is!
Have a great weekend! I found a couple of tres chic treasures today which I'll share either Sunday or Monday!
xxoo
Hi Kathy, what a wonderful niche your've created for yourself! I do not have a specific room either, usually the kitchen counter, or kitchen table!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for stopping by today! Justin was able to fix my button, thanks for the heads up!
Michelle
I love your little space! It's is so chic! I am so impressed with how you dolled it up and made it all yours! I have a space up stairs in one of the extra rooms but it's pretty boring! I am thinking it needs some creative expression! LOL! I am glad you shared this. It may not be a room but it is definately "your" defined work space! I really love this!
ReplyDeleteYour little space is darling and appears to be very functional! I love the harlequin paper!!! Too fun!
ReplyDeleteI've been working the last TWO weeks in my Studio area,,,,,,former Kids Playroom,,,,what a mess! I thought of you when I had my son drag the Antique rocker I want to have re-done upstairs and out of the way!!! Now I'll HAVE to take it in to be re-upholstered!
If you have a chance, stop by and see my little Studio....ugh, still lots of "warts" but much BETTER!!!
Hugs and Love,
Shell

Dorthe
What a perfect little spot! I love how you decorated it...the harlequin paper is the perfect snazzy touch!
ReplyDeleteThe transformation of your creative spot is incredible! Always love your black and white!!
ReplyDeleteIt really doesn't take much space to create - my space is a counter in the laundry room that is just way too messy to share. And, of course, the kitchen table is always piled up with my stuff.
THANK YOU! The only studios that interest me are the ones in small spaces, because - I have small spaces! And to see you put it together is great.
ReplyDeleteI am off to check out your help getting organized website too!
What a great little spot! So, nice to call something your own. LOVE, the zebra stripes! ;o)
ReplyDeleteHugz,
Zandra
Kathy, I love it!!! You know, I had a feeling that there would be some gorgeous black and whites in here!!!! Love the way you put it altogether!!! I say just keep making room for your design tools and your husband may have to find another garage.....just kidding!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your inspirational room!!
Hugs,
Margaret B
HI Kathy!
ReplyDeleteI think that you did a wonderful job creating a little working space that says "Kathy" all over it! I'm amazed that you could see past everything in the garage and make such a pretty little spot. I love the harlequin paper and all your little pretty containers.
It's wonderful.
hugs
Sissie
Wow! Looking good to me. I'm afraid to show my craft room right now. It's a disaster no matter how hard I try to stay organized!

Wowsers! Your niche is so sweet and classy...proof that it doesn't matter where or how small a space is but what you do with it! Thanks for sharing:)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Marsha - put the exercise equipment into the garage and take over that room! That being said, I love, love what you've done to carve out a lovely space for yourself. It is absolutely wonderful. Good for you! I totally understand what it is to grab what space you can.
ReplyDeleteI really am impressed!
xo
Claudia
It just goes to prove you can craft anywhere, with any amount of space, and make it as lovely as you choose. I think YOU should win first prize. It's the best craft space I've seen so far. Thanks for sharing your delightful upgrade from hubby's stuff to your beautiful "studio."
ReplyDeleteHey, I'm glad you decided to do it because how many gals out there have that small space instead of a room or a studio? What you did is sheer brilliance. I love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely space you have created, and so organized!!! Thanks for sharing your space. Blessings~~~Daphne
ReplyDeleteVery nice use of your space, you've really made it your own. Love the Paris them. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteWonderful space for you to create! So organized and creative.

I can't believe how elegant and creative your space is. That Harlequin paper is perfect for your area! I love how you've creative a beautiful spot out of nothing. You are so creative! Thanks for changing your mind and sharing your space--I'm sure it will inspire others who don't have an actual room of their own. Also, thanks for stopping by my blog and sending wonderful comments.
ReplyDeleteI never would have known this was in a garage until you see the whole picture. You have done a great job making your own space. Love the black and white paper on the background.
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy,
ReplyDeleteI think you did a wonderful job of making yourself a special area. Until we moved into this home my stuff was jam packed into one area {if you can imagine that!!} It was a disaster to reach for anything..LOL
Anyhow I have so enjoyed seeing your transformation...see... now for next year's party you can snag some more of that garage and before you know it'll be yours! LOL
Thank you for visiting with me and strolling through my studio..it's been a labor of love to put together and now after a year in our home I feel like I can "spread my wings" and fly!
Have a wonderful day,
Stephanie ♥

That space is sooo you, Kathy! All the elements you've brought in make it delightful. I especially like the rabbit string holder you're now using for scissors. Too cute!!!
ReplyDeleteI know you must be counting down the days for grandbaby's arrival. I just saw my sweet little granddaughter yesterday. It seems I can never get enough of her. Just wait and see if you don't feel the same way!

ReplyDeletewhat a great spot you've created for yourself!

Are we amazing that we can make a space for ourselves, before the new house with spare bedroom although I say spare... it is the guest room but as I don't ask people to come over from England any more it is all mine..and that how it going to stay. I was in the laundry room... you have made a wonderful space and I can tell you craft some wonderful things there... if you get time pop over and see me. The kettle is always on ready for a cup of tea .. Yes i know very English...anyway you can have coffee if you want.~ Wendy at Blissangels
ReplyDeleteDear Kathy, what a fantastic make over...you always have some creative ideas! I love the space you created...thanks for sharing!

Hi Kathy,
ReplyDeleteI can see lots of ingenuity at work here. Very creative use of space and furniture. Good idea to use the paper for decoration. I'll have to remember that one.
Thanks for the tour!
~ginger
I am so glad you posted! You're so right, not everyone has a room for creating and crafting. I didn't get one til this last year when my middle son got married and moved out.
ReplyDeleteI just love all the creative and clever touches.
Kathy,
ReplyDeleteI love it. It is so nice to have a little space to create.
I gave you an award you can check it out here
http://justdevinestyle.blogspot.com/2010/06/award-for-lil-ol-me.html
I understand if you are an award free blog. Just know I thought about you! XO
Love it,Kathy! I have a little space in our garage, for creating "glue gun" things, and it is nothing as darling as yours. This just shows that it doesn't matter where you create, just that you do. xo Lidy
ReplyDeleteCarving out your own little niche instead of having a whole room can sometimes be a real challenge. I think you accomplished that real well, Kathy. Just love all the little details. Thanks for sharing.

I love your ingenuity for your creative space. Man, if you had a room, it would be fabulous, cause you have such a flair!!! My best friend's space is in her garage and it is a great place for her to escape to!

You go girl! Way to use what you've got. Many of us struggle with getting the space we want in the space we have and you've done a great job! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy,
ReplyDeleteLove your creative space and the pics are great. You know I love the black and white and your harlequin wall is so inspiring.
Being part of a garage too just shows we can carve out a creative space with a little creativity. You have done that beautifully.
Love it all.
Thank you for stopping by and your kind comments. So nice to meet you and I have enjoyed my visit to your wonderful blog.
Hugs, Celestina Marie
Love what you did with your space - love the black and white and pink! A girl has gotta do what a girl has gotta do! I love your accents and creativity in putting your space together - it is fabulous! Thanks for sharing and thanks for stopping by to see my space! :-)
ReplyDeleteI love the harlequin paper! You're so right not everyone has a seperate room to create in. Most of the time I drag everything into the dining room and use the table there! Love the black and white scheme!
ReplyDeleteManuela
I love your space Kathy and I think it's so great that you've taken a little time and really made it a special and enjoyable place that you'll want to go to! Some people have a closet, some have a spare bedroom, some set up shop in their unused dining rooms, some have whole basements like me... I don't really think it matters where your special place is as long as you carve our a spot for yourself somewhere!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my studio!
Tania
You did a wonderful job utilizing the space. I love the harlequin paper and the pink accents. So girly and classy too. I think you have created a little heaven on earth and I enjoyed peeking into your creative world. Thank you for sharing. Enjoy!

I really like your inspiring signs in your shop too...
We all need those positive " affirmations" nearby!

Wow I am impressed with your little spot in the garage. Love all the pretty details to make it "your" space.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your visit and kind words.
So glad to meet you.
nicely done...love the 'paris-y stuff!' just goes to show we creative folks really don't need a lot of space to fulfill our dream!
ReplyDeleteThanks for reminding us that you don't have to have a room devoted to it, but you can carve out a niche and create something wonderful!
ReplyDeleteYou know what? I am so glad you showed your wonderful creatively done creative space. I love your use of gift wrap for the background and the bold colors are so fun. You have shown here that you don't need an entire room to be creative in. This is one of my favorites! Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful little spot you have - you have done a great job making is cosy and pretty.
Thank you so much for visiting over at my place too.

ReplyDeleteKathy,
ReplyDeleteI love your space! You utilized every inch! The paper is so you! And Mr. Bunny is too flippin' cute.:)
I think you did a great job in a short period of time and getting Hubby to move over a bit. Looks very Ha-cha to me love all of it. Can't wait to see how much more space you can take over next year! Lol. Thanks for sharing! XOXO
ReplyDeleteHello Kathy, I love your little creative space... and who says it has to be BIG? I have a room, but it is a small one and I am quite happy there! Love all of your special finds and the bunny especially! xoxo Julie Marie
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness Kathy...I adore that bunny head!!! I love how you have carved yourself out a space and made it all your own. When I was younger like you are, I only had the kitchen table to create on, so I feel blessed to have what I have now. But I believe that it is so important for us to create that it really doesn't matter where we do it, as long as we DO it.
ReplyDeleteYou have made yourself a lovely place to work.
hugs
Hi, Kathy! I have enjoyed seeing what you've done with your space--it looks great! Love the little wooden box find and the ceramic scissor-holding rabbit. Your creativity is plain to see in your space, even if it's small.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your lovely comments about my bears! I am so glad you like them. It is such fun to design the pattern and then watch the bear come to *life.* Please come back to visit anytime!
