Dorothy Draper ~ Inspiring Decorator

"Don't just stand there knowing your room needs a pick-me-up. Do something!" ~ Dorothy Draper.

One of my all time favorite interior decorators is Dorothy Draper. I think what I admire most about her is that she became a businesswoman in a time when it was not the norm, and she was very good at it too! Dorothy Draper received no formal schooling in interior design and decorating - in fact, she had no schooling for it at all and was self-taught.

Dorothy Draper was born into influence and married into it as well, when she married Dr. George Draper in 1912. She decorated her homes in such style that her society friends asked her to decorate theirs. She not only did residences but hotels as well, some of which still bear her trademark designs.

Her no-nonsense quote above is one of my favorites and is on my website; perhaps to give that little nudge to a potential client that wants to do something, but is not sure.

I also love the fact that the book In The Pink Dorothy Draper does incorporate one of the colors I utilize in my logo, website and blog; and a color that best compliments people's coloring (it's pink, in case you couldn't guess!).

Thanks Kristen! She is one woman I would have liked to have met and spoke about decorating with.

Thank you Ashley! I find her an inspiring woman even in our time.

Thanks Charlene! I just changed it (on my website too). I think she was probably a very direct woman!

Thanks Kimberly! I like finding out how decorators/designers got started in their field. Some of them have some fascinating stories!

Great quote, and a very inspiring woman. For people like me who don't have formal training in decorating & design, it's great to see that you don't necessarily need an education in the field to be successful :-)

I definitely need to read her book. I am a plain Jane when it comes to decorating - no talent at all. I just try to make the colors match. lol

I stopped by to welcome you to SITS! Glad you joined up with us.

Kelly ~ I did a short program, but mainly for the title. I'm an interior design school drop-out!

Valerie ~ As long as you like it, that's all that matters! Thanks for the welcome!

Carma ~ I like pink, black and white together as well! I've seen some beautiful bedrooms done with that color combo and it looks great.

BTW, I like you profile!

Determination and CONFIDENCE. She must have had such confidence to jump right in and start her business.

She was (and still is) an inspiring woman. I'd like to read a little bit more about her myself.
