While the weather can’t seem to make up its mind here, I am starting to think about how I want to add some flowers into our landscape this year. I have two urns {one by our garage door and one by the front door} that I like to change up each year.
Our first year here I used a fern.
I’ve been pinning some inspiration and my daughter has been sending me pins of some that she comes across, too. So far, these are my favorites. This one below is in a window box, but could easily be adapted to a container.
I usually use colored and interesting foliage over flowers to keep bees and wasps away from the doors. This way there is less of a chance of them making their way into the house. I’m finding it hard to resist this one with hydrangeas though.
I usually try to use something full, something trailing and something tall. Geraniums might be a good flower to use; I love them in pink.
I hadn’t thought of using ornamental grass in a container, but I like it as the “something tall” for a different look.
I do love a full look though and I did get that with coleus.
I love using Potato Vine and/or Creeping Jenny as my trailing plants.

Love the container inspirations you have posted. I cannot wait to get in our yard and start working. Last year was horrible time for our back yard. Sewer pipes had to be installed.

Long Island has def decided it is winter, 5 inches of snow today. I was hoping my dusty miller would survive, I planted 3 flats of it last year, but I don't know. It was buried under ice for so long. I am worried about my clematis too!
I don't do too much container gardening, it makes more work for me. I have to water it all! The gardens get water from the irrigation system, but the containers, it's all me! :)

Once it's warm enough I do the same thing every year: tall spike in the middle, inpatiens for color and trailing vinca vine. Gives varying height, texture and color. Love the hydrangea example! Our front porch is too sunny for them:( xoKathleen

I love hydrangeas, didn't know you could grow them in a container. We had 70 degree weather today, and I couldn't resist buying a few plants at Lowe's today. I am terrible with plants, though, so we'll see how long the pot of flowers by the front door survives.
Love the hydrangeas! We have to keep our planting to a minimum this year with the drought although right now we are having RAIN (and even tornadoes, go figure?!?!) and my little veggie in a pallet garden is loving it!!

These are great inspiration. I always want to put all the plants in my pots and urns. John always bugs me and says that it is too many and it will be overcrowded. Then I see all these and it is so pretty. What to do with him, I don't know. I may have to fight harder this year, if we have time, LOL!

Those are all pretty! The bees don't really seem to bother my hydrangeas so you may be able to put those near the door. I also like coleus because it comes in some many different colors.

I have always adored those gorgeous containers at the garden centers that have so many beautifully placed flowers and plants in one container...works of art!...I just bought my yearly ferns for the porches...that means Spring is here!!!
