While I’m sure my son-in-law made sure to get a Mother’s Day gift for my daughter from my granddaughter, I thought it would be fun to do something with her that we could give to her mother together. Plus, I like to do at least one craft type thing with her when I babysit and this was it for last week.
I kept four tin cans out of the recycling, washed them out, and spray painted them Heirloom White ahead of time.
I picked out a selection of scrapbook papers from my supply for my granddaughter to pick from and then cut the ones she picked with decorative scissors to cover the cans. I had her help me apply them with Mod Podge. We are leaving a portion of the top and bottom of the can showing, hence the painting.
Once they dried, I turned them over and nailed a few holes in each one for drainage. When I went to Lowe’s to get some plants for myself, I picked up four herb plants to put in them.
I got {front} parsley and sweet basil, {back} rosemary and oregano. I think I will be going back to get one of the mint plants they had to put in the pot I usually keep on our little table. They even had a Chocolate Mint!
Back at my house, we transplanted them into the decorated cans and added plant markers, decorated with herb labels I found on Pinterest and applied with Outdoor Mod Podge. I found the plant markers at Lowe’s, too.
A nice little Mother’s Day gift for my daughter that I know she will enjoy!
I’m sure this would make a nice gift for other occasions besides Mother’s Day, too. Father’s Day is coming up!

Oh, so cute, Kathy. I remember buying chocolate mint years ago, then never found any again. I need to look for it at Lowe's!

What a great Mother's day gift idea!! I love that you do such special things for your daughter and with your granddaughter. The labels and cans are all so pretty. I've started my own garden this year but really need to get to planting the herbs indoors right now. Love, love, love this gift! I hope you had a great mother's day, Kathy! ~ Jamie
Oh Kathy, how sweet! I bet Mommy loved it!! I love doing little projects with my grandsons. Hope you have a wonderful weekend, Gail
Kathy this is adorable and a great idea. The only problem I would have is having cans large enough for the plants to flourish. With being only the two of us we don't usually use large canned goods, LOL.
