I left the note on the refrigerator so everyone would see it ~ “Save that Whitman Sampler box!”. I could hear the mumbling, “What does she want with the Whitman box?”, “I don’t know, I guess she’s going to make something with it.” Do you hear that around your house?
When I saw this box {and after I ate the chocolates that I like}, I thought it would make a great box to alter and repurpose. I decided that it would be perfect for a Valentine’s Day project, so last weekend I got to it. Now, before you say it’s too early, please know that I have been working on a keepsake box for my granddaughter for the past 4 months! It’s not done yet.
So I got out some great scrapbook paper that some bloggy friends sent me; a Valentine graphic from The Graphics Fairy; a Tim Holz key; a little banner I made that says “I Love You, Because . . .”, glitter; craft glue and some Mod Podge. {Any tips on applying just a line of glitter to an edge would be appreciated; this was a bit more than I wanted}. After cutting each paper to fit the section I wanted it in, I applied each to the box with Mod Podge.
Once that dried I did a top coat, but on the top of the box I added my Valentine graphic. I didn’t add a topcoat of Mod Podge to the graphic. Once that all dried, I adhered my banner and the key.
This is a Valentine’s Day gift for my hubby. Inside the box I have pieces of paper and on each piece of paper I finished the sentence, “I Love You, Because . . .”. Now I just need to finish that keepsake box!

How creative! I love that you thought of doing this and ACTUALLY did it! I often have great thoughts and then life gets in the way of my actually carrying them out. This is adorable and so very "green"!

So cute, Kathy, I love this idea! Thanks for sharing! XOXO ~Liz
What a great idea. I think I may try it. Very romantic.
So pretty! I love that harlequin (sp?) paper. It really makes everything else pop. Hope he loves it!

Wow, it turned out perfect, Kathy!!! I love, love your project!!! Happy New Year...I hope it is a wonderful year ahead filled with lots of fun creativity!!!
XO
What a lovely Valentine gift for your hubby, Kathy!!
My dad used to get a box of Whitman's EVERY Christmas when I was young. I can remember opening up the box and checking the lid to see which chocolates were the ones I liked. What a "sweet" memory seeing the box brought me this morning!
To apply a thin line of glue apply it with a toothpick or a straight pin. I have a fine silver tip cap that I use for my glue bottles (I pour glue into a small plastic bottle) or I use a monojet syringe.

That's so sweet. I love how it turned out and all the elements you used. Happy New Year, Kathy!
Here's the part where you find out there is someone zannier than you. I saved the heart shaped candy boxes from last year. :)
I use "Glitz" from Ranger - you can make a pretty fine line if you are careful.
This is so cute.
I love this! And the littler banner looks three dimensional! You are starting the year off right...getting stuff done..I better get busy!

Oh I just love this. Personal gifts made with love are hands down the best and most meaningful. Fabulous idea!
Great idea! No, it's not too early....
That is adorable. I hate to throw out nice boxes like that too. And, I always loved a covered box for the Valentines.

Just found your blog via The Graphics Fairy. Love the beautiful box!!!
I had to laugh about the note on the fridge. When my husband starts to pick up something - and I start to protest - even before I finish my sentence, he says, "I know - Collage...."
Gorgeous...I'm thinking the Whitman boxes are the new cigar boxes as they are so strong and versatile.
What a cute and clever idea! I love the Valentine graphic. I love personal gifts like that.

What a fun and cute keepsake box! Such a great idea to repurpose the candy box, too! I always thought boxes like that were too nice and sturdy to toss out. Love the glitter, too:)
This is so sweet, Kathy! I know my hubby would love something like this because he is such a romantic! He'd probably like the chocolates included, though! You did a fabulous job!
XO,

Kathy honey this turned out really pretty! How in the world did you come up with such a neat idea.
I would love to hear more about the keepsake box your doing for your granddaughter. If I started now I probably would not be ready for Valentines but I would love to do one

Kathy,
What a wonderful gift! I know it is one that my hubby would treasure.
Thanks for your visit and sweet comment!
What a fabulous repurpose of the Whitman box. You did a great job with this and I love the idea of adding the slips of paper for your husband.

I'm just now finding out about Graphics Fairy and I love what you did with that. Beautiful.
This lil' box is adorable Kathy!
Such a nice Valentine's day gift! I love the idea of an "I love you, Because..." box...:-)
Happy New Year dear Kathy.
Much love: Evi
This is such a great project - and what a memorable gift that I am sure he will treasure forever! And I love that you reused the chocolate box...I might have to buy one (and eat all of the chocolates) just so I have one on hand!

I love Whitman's Sampler boxes! They seem so old fashioned and fun. I had one last week, but my teenagers ate the rest of my chocolates and then threw the box away. Oh, well. There's always next time!
Thanks for a great idea!
Blessings

This is sooo sweet, Kathy. I love the design you created on the box. My hubby really enjoyed the paper chain I made for him many years ago. It, too, had 100 reasons why I love him - written on the links.
This would be such a terrific project to link to my party: http://thebrambleberrycottage.blogspot.com/2011/01/time-travel-thursday-26-ones-that-got.html
I would love to see you there. Anything goes.
