Furniture I’m Not Painting

I think we always talk about furniture we want to paint or can’t wait to give a fresh coat of paint to, but I thought I’d show you some pieces of furniture in my house that I won’t paint.

I was so happy when we bought this chest.  I love painted furniture and it was the first painted piece we got.  I believe my hubby got it for one of my birthdays.  I still love it after ~ about 10 years, I guess, and have no thoughts of painting it.

This huge computer armoire in our great room.  We bought this piece because we needed something for our PC at the time and it has great storage, which we still use.  The scale of this piece works well to balance our great room; having a television and entertainment center on the other side of that doorway you can just see above {and cathedral ceilings} in a 25 x 26 room, a piece this size was needed.

Our dining room hutch, which is oak, but oddly enough I don’t hate it.  I actually kind of like it as is.  The table and chairs are another story altogether!

I love the glass doors on the top.

Last is another painted piece.  Not expensive by any means.  I think I got this table on clearance from JC Penney for $40.00.  I just still like it and think I could fit it in anywhere.  Right now it is in our master bedroom.

Do you have any furniture you won’t paint ~ no matter what the current trend or fad is?

Next post, I’m going to show you furniture I can’t wait to paint!  Amazing how that list is longer than this one!

I would however love to try to paint the piece I have thats similiar style and shape to your first photo.. mine's dark oak and not nearly as pretty..
any suggestions on how I could accomplish that would be greatly appreciated..

Well the only furniture I won't be painting is my bedroom set! It is dark wood and very handsome..everything else in the house has to watch out!

I'm with you Kathy! I know that the trend is to paint everything (and to paint it lighter colors) and while I think there are some pieces it is fun to change up, others I love just as they are. Thanks for sharing all of your lovely furniture with us! :-)

I like this post. With everyone painting furniture nowadays, I just can't bring myself to paint mine. I feel I would ruin it. Oh sure everyone else's looks great and goes along with the newage style of decorating, but once you paint it, you can't get the original finish back if you change your mind. You just have to paint it again and again everytime the trends change. The only pieces I would dare to paint are old yardsale finds or road side pieces that were free or only a few dollars. That way if it's ruined you haven't lost much.

And it would be boring if it all was painted! Having some nice word makes for a better mix.
Happy Weekend~

I love those two painted pieces too. Proof you don't have to paint everything. Hmmmm...got me to thinking what I wouldn't paint. I know what I want to paint BUT not what I wouldn't...

Hi Kathy,
I totally understand that there are pieces in our homes that we cannot paint. I can see why you wouldn't paint your pieces.
I have a cabinet in my family room that has handpainted rabbits on it and another armoire in the guest room that was handpainted. Also several mahogany pieces.
Painted furniture looks good mixed in with the traditional.

That armoire is fantastic.

A piece that I would never paint is my antique brass bed that has been passed down since my great-great grandma. It was originally painted white, but after a billion years and a house fire, it is more of a peachy-tan. The original paint is starting to flake off so you can see spots of shiny brass and it has a perfect shabby-chic antique look and feel that I love.

lol... now, I'd paint it ALL! lol

Hi Kathy,
I have a hand-painted armoire that my hubby bought for me already painted...I would never dream of touching it...I love it just as it is. Your pieces are lovely. Thanks for stopping by today. Have a wonderful weekend.

Hugs and Kisses,
Ana

Hey Kathy! Isn't it funny that these days ANY piece of furniture seems to be up for painting? But not all--definitely not all!

Perhaps I'm just slow to notice--forgive me if I'm terribly late in mentioning this--but I love your profile picture! You look so happy!

Those are wonderful pieces Kathy! The antique dresser by the fireplace is off limits. I have a pie safe in our kitchen that my father in law made for us. Our kitchen table that I purchased unfinished before we even got married. It needs to be sanded on the top but other than that it will always stay that way. Ummmm, this is a great post!! I think I will join you and do one too!:)

This is a great post, very thought provoking. Those are great pieces that you have and lovely just the way they are. I'm kinda drooling over the large computer storage piece ~I like the shape, size and colour! Your post has inspired me to make one of my own, but of course I gave credit for the idea and linked back here. Hope that is okay!

Hi Kathy!
I agree that these pieces looks great just the way they are. And you're very decisive about what you should and shouldn't paint. Which I'm envious of *winks*
I on the other hand am torn torn torn *winks* I have a french armoire (it's an antique) in my guestroom (which is very shabby chic in style) My heart wants to paint it white and antique it soooo badly but my head...OK truth be known....my husbands head, doesn't want me to paint it. So my question is do you have any pieces like that? Ones that you're oscillating about? And how did you decide what to do?

And I wanted to tell you that I hope everything goes great with your new move! For sure don't forget the dollhouse! Vanna...your newest follower.

OH MY KATHY! I am so thrilled someone did a post about this! I would NEVER paint good furniture! NO MATTER the fad...and it is just a fad! I have seen so GORGEOUS furniture painted in blogland and I know that some day there will be regrets! I even went furniture shopping the other day (looking for a desk and dining room set) and I also wanted to see if painted furniture was taking over the "industry" ...will it's not. Yes, there is some pieces and I did like what I seen, but painting over BEAUTY for faddish reasons is not anything I'll be doing! Can you tell you hit one of my buttons...lol ;) Great post and much needed! Nancy
