I'm hooking up with Metamorphosis Monday hosted by Susan at Between Naps On The Porch and I have to give a shout-out to Nester over at Nesting Place, who talks about window mis-treatments on her blog, and has pictures and how-to's.
When our powder room went from this:
To this:
I had to take down my pink and green plaid, box pleated valance. I was very sad because I had purchased that from Calico Corners about 15 years ago as something that was made and never picked up {got a fantastic price on a custom valance}.
I got this picture from Home Goods to put in our very small powder room. I loved the colors and it went well with the espresso colored cabinet and mirror, as well as the Blond Wood paint.
And I realized . . . . the fabric I am putting on the chairs I'm redoing has these exact colors in it! I knew, though, that if I put holes in the wall to mount a rod and sewed drapes I would not only never hear the end of it from hubby {because he spackled the original holes before we painted}, but it would take me at least two hours to sew a valance. So, I went the mis-treatment route!
I found the trim in my stash and it was the exact width of the fabric. The colors in the tassel trim were not what I would have picked if I was purchasing it to do this, but it was close enough for me. This is becoming more meant to be as I go along! I wanted to see if I could make a no-sew valance. {I like to challenge myself every once in awhile}.
I fired up the glue gun and I hot glued the selvage edges and the top edge. I then hot glued the trim to the bottom edge, which hid the raw edge. I had upholstery tacks that I was using as push pins on a bulletin board and I grabbed them.
I put the two ends up first {after finding the middle of the fabric and the middle of the window ~ I just eyeballed it}. I then took one side and pleated it in {I think you can see it in the picture above}, then did the same thing on the other side. I pushed the upholstery pins into the wall as close to the top molding as possible.
And, done!
I still want to tack the pleated areas down, and I could do that with a simple needle and thread. But, I want the whole thing to be a no-sew, so I will most likely pin it either with straight pins or safety pins.
This is as close as I could get to show the picture and the valance near each other {it really is a small powder room}.

You did a great job! The fabric on the valence and the print look great together.
Hi Kathy,
Your no sew window treatment is terrific! I like the idea of seeing what a person can come up with using more creativity then money. Happy Met Monday.
Cathy
Kathy, this is a very cute treatment, and congrats on doing such a great job. I never would have guessed they were Nesterized, but that's the beauty of the Nester's advice! I think I'm about to nesterize some things in our house. Will post them if I do.
Great job!
Happy Met Monday...
XO,
Sheila :-)
Hi Kathy~
I can't imagine why you didn't like that wallpaper!
You are handy with that glue gun.
Anything to avoid sewing!
Donna
Very plush and rich looking ! Great job !
Kammy
Kathy, I love your "new" powder room. Can you tell me what brand your Blond Wood paint is? Love it!
Sharon
Yay Kathy for making a mistreatment even though you know how to sew! (Some of us just HAVE to make them this way because we have no other choice...that doesn't involve learning to sew that is.:) Your mistreatment looks great and compliments the print beautifully.
Really like your valance - Very Pretty!
Very nice update to your bathroom! Love the mistreatment, the fabric is beautiful!

Your new window treatment is very nice and the no sew is always a plus, changing it from season to season, sure makes it easier, great job.
Looks fabulous! Great transformation.
You wouldn't have gotten a better result if you HAD sewn the valance! The bathroom looks great, so much better than the before!
Janell
You and Nester are so smart! Your bathroom looks great and your window treatment looks custom and designer--good job! Maybe there is hope for me!
You did a fantastic job! It's gorgeous! I'm redoing a bathroom this week and have a note to check out Nester's mistreatments too. :)
Thanks for sharing your beautiful transformation. I love before and happily ever afters!
Roeshel
That valance looks fantastic. Very custom and amazing that is no sew. And no curtain rod either if I read that right? Wow!
Thank you, Lisa! I love happy accidents like that.
Thanks, Cathy! Amazing what you wind up doing when you are stuck at home all day with NO car.
Have fun with it, Sheila! This was stress-free, which doesn't always happen when I'm sewing something.
Thank you, Donna! If my husband had his way that wallpaper would still be up!
Thank you, Kammy! I really like it myself!
Hi Sharon! Thanks! That paint is from Benjamin Moore.
Thanks, Beth! I did consider taking the sewing machine out, but really just wasn't in the mood to deal with the bobbin and finding brown thread, etc. In the time it would have taken me to set up, I was done!
Thank you, Glenda! Thanks for visiting my blog!
I fell in love with that fabric two years ago, Mary Ellen, and still love it!
I didn't even think of that part, Phyllis! A quick change out could be quite easy.
Thanks, Shannon!
Thank you, Janell! I like it better, too, and this color allows me to bring in reds or blues or greens ~ any color I want, to accessorize. I'm thinking of getting some red in there for the holidays, especially since I'm hosting this year and this bathroom will get the majority of use.
Thanks, Susan! I had no idea where I was going with it once I was standing in front of the window, but had fun figuring it out.
Thank you, Roeshel! This satisfied my need to have some fabric at the window and not have to spend any money to do it.
Hi Lisa! That's right ~ no curtain rod. I just used my upholstery tacks.
I SO wish I could do something like this! I am impressed. It turned out lovely...beautiful fabric too!
Happy Met Monday!

What a great looking valance! I think it's great that you used leftover trim and fabric to make it, too. What a great no-sew project!
Thanks for visiting my blog. I've been enjoying poking around on yours today and am now a follower.
Jane
Wow! You did great and the bathroom looks wonderful!
I have a linky party and a plea for help at my place, care to stop by:http://theshadesofpink.blogspot.com/2009/10/room-month-bedroom-conundrum.html
L ~ you think you're impressed ~ I couldn't believe it came together so smoothly! You could do this!
Thanks, Jane! I'm glad you've had a chance to visit. I have so much trim and fabric; I actually sold a good portion of it at a garage sale with my sister back in May/June. I kept the really pretty stuff that I just couldn't part with, though!
Hi Sheri! Thank you and thanks for coming to visit. I will definitely come by to check out your party and plea!
what a cool idea and it looks fantastic; who would have thought?
Soooooo much better! It looks serene sooo much better. Did I mention it looks so much better? Nice work, Kathy!
~WOW! Kathy your new bathroom looks amazing! Wonderful colors and I adore the pretty butterfly picture from Home Goods. Nice job!
It looks so fancy and nice - can't believe it's a no-sew!
Thank you, nannykim! Who would have thought, indeed! : )
It is soooo much better, Marian!
Thanks, Melissa! I did this because the paper was peeling in the corners and I knew we were going to be putting our house on the market shortly.
Thanks, Laurel!
This looks great! I love the print and the colors in it. Definitely my style ;o)
Great job! I love the tassel trim!
It looks great! Your bathroom makeover is wonderful.
Thank you, Susan! It's got a softness to the colors about it that I like.
Thanks, Maryann! I'm glad I had a piece that fit; I think it would look quite different without the trim.
@ Delightful Dwelling ~ Thank you! Quite the difference from the floral paper.
Kathy you are right! This design would so work in my master bath. Now all I have to do is find fabric. {Dont you love the "all I have to do."} Thanks for the inspiration!
I'm noticing a trend here...spray paint, glue gun...you're a very efficient decorating diva! :)
Susan
You could probably use an old drape panel, too, Norma Lee. And really, all you need is a little bit of fabric.
Thank you, Susan! Let's hope they all hold up! : )
New sew?!? I'm totally up for that!! That material is spot on with the picture, amazing! So plush and decadent!
The outcome turned out fab!
Thanks for linking it up to the party. :)
