Are You Stacked?

I hope you didn’t choke on your coffee over my title!  I’m wondering how many of you have a stacked washer/dryer rather than side-by-side.  The only appliances we have to purchase for our condo are a washer and dryer.  My hubby has given me the option of stacked or side-by-side units.

I really don’t know much about the stacked units, having had side-by-side forever, but did a little looking around online.  I came across pictures as well as some helpful information.

Younghouselove.blog

Young House Love did a laundry room makeover and I love how they took advantage of the space on the side of the stacked unit.  You should check out their post on it if you get a chance.

bellemaisonblog

Belle Maison shared some laundry room inspiration pictures and these are side-by-side front loaders {my washer is a top loader} and I do like that you could put a counter on top.

Found this one on the Country Living website.  I don’t have a window in my laundry room, so I’ll be looking to keep things light.

From Arthur Palmer Kitchens. I don’t know if it’s a good idea to mix laundry with wine ~ mismatched socks, a red shirt in with your husband’s lucky white briefs. . . there could be devastating consequences there.

Apparently, I’m supposed to make up my mind soon.  Meanwhile, I’d love to hear your experiences with a stacked unit and whether or not you’d recommend it.

Don't know about the stacked washer and dryers, but red socks and white briefs are ok now as long as you have color catchers, they work pretty good!

I had a stacked washer and dryer years ago when I bought my first condo and my niece had one too. No problems at all.

What I do have a problem with is the front loaders. I dislike mine (wanted to use hate, but that is just an ugly word) immensely. It doesn't save on water as I have to hit the extra water button every time and oftentimes wash my clothes twice as they come out dirtier than when they went in.

I clean the drum every time I'm done with it so it doesn't smell and empty out the water that doesn't drain out completely once a month but I think it's soap residue that accumulates (and I use HE).

Unless you use the speed wash, it takes over an HOUR to wash one load!

Do you want me to tell you about the dryer, LOL It supposedly knows when the clothes are dry and shuts off, yeah, right.

We bought an LG. I had my Maytags for close to 25 years until the dryer quit. They definitely don't make them like the used to.

Okay, that was my 2 cents worth LOL

LOL!!! Why, yes, Kathy, . . . I am stacked ;o) My washer and dryer, that is. I don't have a laundry room, but a "laundry closet". When we purchased our new front loaders, we opted to stack to give more room for a base cab/countertop in the laundry area. We removed the bifold closet doors and opened up that recessed area to create more of a laundry "room" in a back hall area by the kitchen that leads to the door that goes out to the garage. As of now, I really like the room created by stacking, but I'm thinking as years go by and me and my back get older, I may not like bending over so far to deal with clothes in and out of the washer. I figure I'll worry about it when that day comes - hopefully not for a bunch more years. Incidentally, I have pics on my blog of my laundry area if you're interested in taking a peek. Click on the "laundry" tag on my sidebar.

I had a stacked unit in a condo we had a few years back. It was in a closet, not a laundry room, so there was no place to fold clothes.

I have a side by side now with front loading. The only thing I would do different is NOT get the bases they sit on. It is convenient not to have to bend over to get the laundry out, but they are so high, again there is no place for a counter to fold.

I have side by side front loaders. I will say that because they are not on stands it's a bit of a pain to have to squat down to put the laundry in and take it out. I often find myself kneeling on the floor. That's okay for this point in my life, but I wonder down the line how annoying that's going to get. However on the plus side you can fold on top of the front loaders.

Kathy I'm not sure I would like the stacked option. Hmmm... They all look pretty though.

I can't believe it's been a few years since you posted about moving before. I remember that post. Wow, time is flying by these days.

I have the old style stacked washer dryer that is one piece. I am not a fan. We are working on updating our laundry area/bathroom.
We were looking for more space in the room, and looked at the new stacked machines. I'm 5'2" tall and 60 years old. I wear reading glasses, and I had trouble reaching the controls when the machine was on top, and knowing what they said without a step stool.
I'm hoping that when this machine wears out, there will be better options for me!

Two friends have had trouble with mold/mildew growing in their machines. You might find info online about how to solve that problem, or which companies have resolved the issue.
I can leave the lid up on my washer, so I don't have the problem.

Kathy, all of your changes are so exciting. I'm so glad you found such a lovely neighborhood. I can't give you an opinion on stacked vs. not. The only thing I can say is I wouldn't want a standard front loader--I'm tall and the less bending over I do, the happier I am :). I'm not getting any younger, either!

Well I have never had a Stacked unit...but am I right when they say they are smaller in Load capability...such as BIG blankets and things....If I HAD to get a stacked unit I would...Well that's because I would HAVE to because of space....But if I had the option I would go Side by Side...I think stacked reminds me of a LAUNDRY shop... : ) Can't wait to see what you get...

Okay that is.. Laundry Mat...Not Laundry Shop.. he he he... :)

Hi Kathy,

After having a side by side Maytag set (the same set) for 41 years we invested in high effeciency, front loading LG appliances. Yes, we stacked them and I really love them. They are large capacity and we've never had a problem with them in any way.

I have side by side now, but I think if I had the opportunity and not the big window behind my side by sides, I would opt to be stacked. ;))

When my husband and I first married we invested quite a lot of money in a full size 2 piece stacking washer and dryer unit. I HATED them! They were super inconvnient to use unless of course you are tall enough to reach into the very back of the top unit to retrieve your clothes. The washer weighed a million pounds because it was what weighted the unit down so it didn't bounce across the floor during spin cycle or so the dryer didn't topple off. Did I say that I HATED them. Besides they take up just as much space it's just vertical space instead of horizontal leaving no space for cabinetry above the unit or a place for hang up clothes. I say DON'T DO IT, Don't waste your money. Anyway that just one girls opinion. Good luck on your move and i'm sure you will be delighted with whichever option you choose. I have stacked front loaders....I love them but I think I would love them more if they were side by side. The only reason I say that is because the washer is so low that it hurts my back getting heavy loads in and out. Other than that I love them!!

I've always had side by side with a top loading washer and front loading dryer. I like them but feel it is time to upgrade. I just want to be able to do large loads and have everything come out clean as a whistle. Let us know what you do!

Jane

I prefer side by side but if I had to save space, I'd stack them. And no, I'm not stacked in any sense of the word - ha! But then you knew that already.

Never had stacked! I always use the tops of mine to fold laundry and separate it out to everyone's own stacks to be picked up and put away. The put away part was sometimes an issue when they were younger!

I bought a large set of stacked and once that money was spent- it was too late.. Every time I used them for 7 years I fussed and fumed, they were awful and this was a great brand with high ratings.. I now have my side by side again and I love it.. stacked just didnt work for me in any way and I hope I never have to have those again.
