I got a catalog from Grandin Road a few weeks ago and their Harvest Leaves Collection caught my eye. Specifically, the hanging basket pictured below.
Shortly after seeing this and bookmarking the page, I found three of these hanging baskets {with coconut liner} at a garage sale for $1.00 a piece. I bought all three, kept two for myself and gave one to my daughter. So that took care of the basket. Please excuse the glam shots of my garage, where I put this together.
I decided to go to the dollar store to see if I could put together something similar to the Grandin Road one on a budget. The Grandin Road basket is $69.00. The dollar store didn’t have too much Fall décor out at the time, but I bought two small resin pumpkins, 4 Oak leaf picks, 5 assorted Fall picks, foam for the basket, and a bag of Spanish moss, spending $11.00. The project cost me $12.00 to make in total.
I used a little hot glue for the foam in the basket liner. Then just stuck the bunches into the foam. I covered it up with the Spanish moss {used the whole bag} and then used hot glue on the resin pumpkins.
I am going to make a second one, with the other basket I had gotten, for the shepherd’s hook I have near the garage door walkway.
I also want to try and do their urn filler that they are selling for $159.00. This does not include the urn it is just the filler. I have an urn just like this outside our front door and this would bring me right up to when I decorate for Christmas.
I’m hoping to do that urn next and I will share that project with you, too, and then I’ll get a picture of the whole area.
Catalogs can be great sources of inspiration for projects. Most of the time you can come up with a reasonable facsimile of the item being offered but at a lower price if you make it yourself. Have you copied something from a catalog recently?

love your copy kat hangers. I have an empty container on my front porch so I think I'll try to do the same type décor.
As for copy kat-ing, I recently posted my knockoff Pottery Barn desk chair that I made for $35 as opposed to their $350 one.
Your basket turned out great! I can't wait to see the urn. I might have to copy you! I usually just stick a pumpkin in my urns. The one you picture is so much better!
So cute! I have two of these hanging baskets sitting outside empty right now. This would be perfect for hanging on my front porch because they will not require watering. LOL! I will have to make a trip to the dollar store very soon. I love this idea!

Oh my these are fabulous! What was I thinking when I passed over two of these at GW in Austin last weekend? They were a whopping $3 each :( You really nailed those copycats, and my gosh that urn will be gorgeous too! Can't believe it's still hot up there too. I lived in Ohio until I was 16 and all I can remember is how cold it was, which would be awesome now that I'm in my 50s LOL. Anyway, hope you are doing well, and I'll be looking for a way to copycat you now :)

Wow the dollar store has uplifted the quality of their florals! Your basket looks lovely!!! I am a floral designer so have a few tips: you can use wire ACROSS the basket to hold the foam in better. Also, I ALWAYS cut a bush apart and spread each stem around the arrangement. Just some ideas for ya!!! Can't wait to see the urn, it is beautiful! XO, Pinky

Gorgeous Kathy! I get their catalog too. Love the urn arrangement - I have a black urn like that too but I think I'm just going to do a pumpkin topiary in it since I already have tons of pumpkins. I'll be eager to see how you do your version!
