Combo Post

Just a couple of things to post that don’t really warrant their own separate posts, so I thought I’d just combine them into one.

I found this great cake stand on the One Kings Lane website.  It was $29.00 {not including tax and shipping}.  I think this is the first time I ever ordered from them.  It took awhile to get, but I love it.  Unfortunately, I have no idea what I’m going to put in it or where it will go at the present time {although somewhere in my kitchen or dining room would probably be the obvious choice}.  I’ll have to think on that.  Suggestions are welcome!

I recently added this tray to my Etsy shop.  A little bit of toile with some Heirloom White.  The paint actually matches the creamy white in the toile paper.  It’s a nice little wood tray and OOAK.

Wood Candleholder Redo

Penny from The Comforts of Home posted this inspiration picture from Pottery Barn while looking to spruce up her mantel.

I noticed that the candleholder to the right reminded me of a candleholder that I have and had put away.   I’m pretty sure it’s because I wasn’t feeling the green and pink in the detailing anymore.

While I was Heirloom White spray painting crazy recently, I gave it a couple of coats.

Then added some light gray to the main details to bring them out.  Very subtle.

With a darker gray added to the “rings” in each section.

Here is a close up of the bottom section.  I think you can see the difference in color better in this shot.

A little something missing though.  The top has a hole in it that would hold a taper candle, but I would just sit a pillar candle on the top anyway. 

I found a finial I had in my craft closet and decided to add that.

It’s a little too bright for me so I mixed up some chocolate brown craft paint with some water and put it on with a sponge brush.    {The next pictures were taken on a cloudy, rainy day, so I apologize for the dim lighting}.  Before:

I waited from 3-5 minutes and wiped it off with a paper towel.  The picture below is where I put it on the base and wiped it off.

This picture shows it slathered on before wiping off, in the middle section.

After:

I think it toned it down just enough for me.

Not sure where I’m putting it yet.  I’ve been walking around the house with it and trying out spots.  I think my family is afraid it’s a weapon of some sort, so I hope to find a place to set it down soon!

Living With Imperfection

I’m sure many of you can relate that sometimes your projects do not come out perfect.  Or at least what you consider perfect.  My most recent imperfect project was this table I had and moved into my living room.  I already had everything on hand to complete this project so it cost me nada!

A plain and non-descript table.  Nothing fancy, inexpensive but it’s wood and it’s a good size for a side table.

I decided to paint it and went with Heirloom White {no surprise there!}. 

It turned out smooth, lovely, perfect.  Too perfect!  It needed something else and I decided to try something I’d been wanting to for awhile now.  A harlequin pattern!   I had a very large harlequin stencil {the package said “wall stencil”} and put this on the top of the table.

Some paint got underneath the stencil  and I had to come back in and touch up with some Heirloom White.  I think my 20 year old stencil brush had something to do with that.  I figured since I screwed it up pretty well already, I  might as well go ahead and add some black checks around the table top rim.  Freehand.  Yes, me, shaky did freehand.

I also put a fleur de lis stencil on the bottom portion and did black checks around that edge, too.   

And then, I let it go.  I realized I was never going to get it absolutely perfect and remembered seeing some harlequin pieces in stores that didn’t have super straight edges and how I liked them just fine that way.   So I took it outside and gave the top a spray of polyurethane.

Here it is with a few little things I put on it for now. 

My thrift store mini-tureen filled with small moss balls and the pedestal I got from Willow House, holding a couple of paperbacks tied together with a stamped muslin ribbon.

It sits next to my black and white chair in my living room looking perfectly imperfect and I love it!

A Pillow For My Mom

I picked up a fabric a few months ago with the intention of making something for my Mom with it as she loves roosters.  I decided to go with a pillow for Mother’s Day, but didn’t want to just cut two squares out of it and sew it together.  I decided to use some Osnaberg fabric for the main part of the front and back and cut a square out of the rooster fabric.

I centered it on one of the pieces of fabric and sewed it in place.

I found this trim that I had in my stash and decided to use this to go around the square of rooster fabric.

I think it gives it a designer look and it’s a one of a kind pillow that my Mom just loved!

First Trip To The Restore

I took off a couple of days last week and headed to the Habitat Restore one morning.  I wasn’t really sure what I would find there, but was keeping an open mind.

They had baskets galore! Every shape and size; many with store tags still on them.  Knobs, hinges, plumbing, some great chandeliers to redo, doors all over and what I wound up buying.

Three cabinet door samples from two shelves full!  I chose these colors because I figured they would save me on painting, but they had dark woods, too.  These were $.50 a piece!  I only got three so I could play around and see if I liked what I came up with for them.  If they turn out good, I’ll go back and get more.

This one larger cabinet door to do a vinyl something or other on it.  This one was $5.50.  I have a great idea for the ones with holes in the corners, too.  If I snip the back off a matching button, I can attach it to the other side.

I passed on another type {I think they were probably for drawer fronts because they looked about that size}, but realized after I got home just what I could do with them, so I will be making a trip back for those.

While it may not be a windfall thrift store trip, I could definitely see going back for more specific things at the Restore.  In my case, these cabinet doors and samples!  These are a perfect size for me to play around with in the evenings after the day job.  I hope to have some ideas to show you next week.
