Hooked on Checkerboard Floors

Today I'm participating in Julia's {Hooked on Houses} Hooked on Friday feature. I love checkerboard floors! I've been dying to do one in my own home, but have not been able to ~ yet. I'm adding this to my wish list for when we eventually move.

In the meantime, I have these pictures for inspiration and hope they will tide me over for now!

Wow, beautiful spaces ! In my very first house I had a powder room with black & white checkered floors and zebra wallpaper !

Beautiful...I just love checker board floors! And that laundry is bee-autiful...thanks for the inspiration!

Kathy, those are great examples! Thanks for including me. I adore those floors too & would love to have another painted porch floor.

Kathy,
I love the checkered floors. What fun! I prefer the ones that run on the diagonal, how about you? I am think of doing that in my bedroom that will soon be a craft room.

Tammy ~ I would have liked to do that in our powder room that we redid last year, but hubby wasn't having any of it with ceramic tile {apparently, the cuts for the diagonal are a pain}. Just as well since we're looking to sell.

Jane ~ Rhoda's laundry room is an inspiration picture that I'm keeping on hand for when I do this. I just love it!

Your painted porch floor picture was beautiful too, Rhoda. The great thing about this is that you can achieve it a number of ways ~ paint, vinyl tile, ceramic tile so it can be done to fit any budget.

Yes, Stephanie, the diagonal is my favorite way. This also feeds my harlequin design fetish! I know the main area I would like to do this is whatever area becomes my home office when we eventually move, but Rhoda's laundry room has me thinking of other rooms too.

I have to admit - I love a diamond design. It always brings the eye up and out to expand any area, as opposed to squares. Pair all of that with black and white, and you've got an eye-catching design! Great photos and examples, Kathy. Your blogs are the best! Wanda Horton

The checkerboard is lovely.......but oh my! the Wrapping Room. I wish mine was as neat and tidy as this hobby room.
I guess because it's not a hobby!
I've learned to live with rolls of ribbon surrounding me....but it is a pretty pile. Thanks for the best wishes for our son. Have a lovely weekend.

I wish I had a place for a checkerboard floor. I'll have to think on it and maybe come up with something. Thanks for the great inspiration.

Whenever I have the opportunity, Wanda, I like to recommend a tile floor be laid on the diagonal. I think it just opens it up more. Thank you! : )

Thanks, Sande! I liked that room too, thinking it could just as easily be an inspiration for an office. When I tore my eyes away from the floor I noticed the storage, which I liked too.

It looks like there's enough room for everything in that craft room, Chelsea! I like that picture all around, not just the floor.

That's like me now, Jane. I have no place to do it and really wouldn't want to at this point, since we will be downsizing. I'm just going to plan it for somewhere in whatever house we move into.

I once did one on plywood, while waiting until the client could get the "real" flooring, she loved it and kept it for years. I love all your photos. I am so glad we found each other, I so enjoy your blog.

Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions said...

@Room Service ~ I had seen that in a magazine years ago and I think that's where I first fell in love with the look. I can imagine that the one you did on plywood looked so good. I love all these photos too; I like looking at them and the different size rooms it is done in. I'm glad we found each other too, we seem to have a lot in common and I've been enjoying your blog as well! Have a great weekend!

I would love to have a checkered floor in my home someday. For now it is tile.

I hope you get the checkerboard floor that you want in your next house :-)

My two favourites that you posted are the pale blue & white floor, and the floor at the top of the stairs with the risers that have words on them. Love that look!! It's different and fun :-)

I hope so too, Kelly! I'll be pushing for it, believe me! I love the one with the words on them ~ I think that was perfect for those particular steps.

Great pictures!

It's nice to know I'm not alone in this, Manuela! Your deck must look great. I'll have to visit your blog and read through some of your posts - from what I've seen so far, we seem to share similar likes.

I hope I get one soon too, Lisa! : ) I'll be over to visit your blog this week ~ I love finding new blogs!

@ J Covington ~ That must look fantastic! It's funny how such a simple thing as black and white squares can be loved by so many!

Count me in as a checkerboard lover too! I have no room for them inside the house, so this fall I am hoping to checkerboard the floor on our back porch :).

Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions said...

Oooh, I like the idea of this being brought outside, Beth. I hope if you wind up doing it you will post some pics.

Vera Wangs New York penthouse has them in marble cremes and golds...just beautiful.

Hi, I am a new blogger and found your blog, thought I would join the fun here and put you on my blog roll. Gosh I spend so much time being inspired by other bloggers it's hard to find time for mine. So much to learn.

Thanks for the floor post. I feel inspired.

Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions said...

Yes, I'm hoping and dreaming, too! Thank you for coming by and joining in. I know how you feel, I think I spend most of my time logged in here reading other people's blogs when I'm supposed to be working on my own post.
