My Art Canvas

I participated in the Mantle Party at The Stories of A to Z on Friday.  Beth is so good at decorating her mantle!  If you haven’t yet, you should stop by some Friday and check out everyone’s mantles.  My mantle included a picture of an art canvas that I made.  I was going to share it later on in a different post{and it will be back}, but thought I’d talk about how I made it now.

Over the Summer, I purchased three blank canvases from Michaels with the thought of doing something in my master bedroom in lieu of a headboard.  I realized this wouldn’t work as I like to read in bed and I kept thinking that unless I really mounted these things to the wall, they would keep falling off.  That idea went in the scrap heap {and I’m still looking for that perfect headboard}.

Meanwhile, I still had these three canvases.  Just sitting there.  Waiting for some creative and wonderful project to come along.  And then I saw it.  I read a blog post by Stef at Frugal Home Ideas blog.

I was in love!  Ballard-y looking wall art with a scrolly design that I loved using canvases I already had.  Perfect!  Here is a picture of something similar to what Ballard Design carries.  It’s obviously different, but the idea is there.

Well, I couldn’t believe how she did it!  The next thing you know, I’m ordering my own doormat from Target.   My canvases were a bit wider than Stef’s so I did pretty much the whole pattern of the doormat, where she had taped off the sides of hers.

Here is one of the canvases painted.  This was actually a black paint but it appears brown.

Once they were dry, I then moved outside with my painters tape, white spray paint and my doormat.  {Remember this was over the Summer so I wasn’t dealing with the cold weather yet}.

You lay the mat over the canvas, tape off any area you don’t want to show up on the canvas and then just do a spray over it.  I really only went over it once, making sure I moved not too quick and not too slow.

So that’s how I came to make my own wall art.  I have three of these panels.  I’ll end here, but this project will be back again.

LOVE this!! I have seen it and keep telling myself I need to do it!! I love this look and it reminds me of wrought iron which I also love!

For a headboard have you thought about beadboard with pretty moulding around it and a wide moulding across the top?

Just a thought...lol

Have a great day!

Lou Cinda :)

This is a brilliant idea and yours look just as classy as the Ballard ones. Good job!
I've got swirly all over my walls with the wallpaper done by the previous owners. It's growing on me and it will have to stay for a while.

I love the art - it's gorgeous! I'm mantel challenged because the tv is mounted above it. :( I'm hoping to frame it with some white moulding to help pretty it up a little this year.
