Plain Pine Armoire No More!

My next furniture project is this plain pine armoire.  It started out in our living room and then moved upstairs to a spare bedroom.

IMG_5011_2485

Using some wood appliques {that I got from the gift certificate I won from a Centsational Girl giveaway back in November to Cabinetknobs.com} I attached them to the doors of the armoire.  I turned them upside down because I liked them better that way.

Having no wood glue on hand, I tried it with Gorilla Glue and used blue painters tape to hold it in place until the glue dried.

Using my trusty {and free} can of Glidden Onyx black paint, this is getting transformed!  Besides the paint, I used a sponge brush, regular brush and foam roller.  The regular brush actually worked better than the sponge brush with all the little areas I needed to hit.

Here she is ~ looking quite lovely, although not totally finished!

I. Love. It!   Just like with my coffee table, I feel like I’ve got a brand new piece of furniture!  I am thinking of adding some clear glass knobs to replace the wood ones that were on it.  A coat of polyurethane and it will be done!

So glad I did this {even if it did take up a whole Saturday, and then some for touch-ups}!  Here is the before and after side-by-side.

I’ll show this off again once I get knobs and accessorize the top, but I did want to share it now.

I totally agree with the glass knobs! I have a knotty pine armoire almost exactly like that in my living room that houses my computer....I've been wanting to paint it but not sure about the color. I think black would be too much for me (but I really really like it now that I see yours) but white would get dirty to fast I think. So I'm stuck lol

Nice job Kathy - I want to do something similar to one I have in my bedroom but want to retro fit to fit in my kitchen. Did you have to use anything to to prep it?

Hi Kathy~
Isn't it amazing what a little (or a lot) of paint can do. It certainly looks updated!

Happy Weekend, Donna

Hello Kathy,

It looks great and has given me some inspiration for a cabinet I have that is similar. I repurposed an old entertainment center to use in my mud room to hold some of my dishes and I have been trying to decide whether or not I want to paint it. I like the embellishments you added to yours.

OMG! I once had that same exact armoire! If I'd only known how pretty it could be, I wouldn't have given it away! It looks wonderful with your designer touch!

I thought you were going to paint it then remove the swirlies and just have the design there..Wonder if that would work?

Sandra said...

Very nice makeover...I have a lot of pine pieces but have not painted any yet...I kind of love pine even if it is not really in style anymore. If you keep anything long enough it eventually becomes vogue again doesn't it? thanks for stopping by this week and for your comment! Sandra

You did a wonderful job and in fact I would like to copy it on furniture I need to refinish.
Please could you clarify a few things for me.
I"m gathering you painted the armoire first with black paint and then sprayed the oiled rubbed paint over the black, is this correct?
Thanks so much
