Boxes, Boxes Everywhere!

Fall arrived with us in Ohio on Tuesday.  I have no internet hook up yet and am working off hubby’s air card at the moment, but that should be resolved by next week.  Hopefully, I’ll be able to visit even if it is sporadically.  I thought I’d share with you what I’ve been looking at lately.

This is crazy!  That is the sunroom with all those boxes above, but I’ve got just as many in the master bedroom and the kitchen.  I put my living room furniture into position {somewhat} the night everything had arrived just so I could feel a sense of order somewhere in this house.

Here’s an area I could use some ideas on.  The kitchen cabinet tops and this crazy ledge.  Those baskets are coming down {they were up there when we came in}.  I have some faux greenery I could put on the cabinet tops.

There are four recessed lights in this kitchen – that’s it.  {I told my hubby we need to get some under cabinet lighting ~ stat!}  Two of them seem focused on the ledge.  What do you do with that?  I don’t want a lot of stuff up there because it will just collect dust, so I’m looking for some suggestions.

I’m thinking I’ll do posts as I get a room in order.  I need to open up all the boxes and see what’s where.  Furniture placement seems to be working out okay so far, but that could change.  This place needs lots of lamps, so I think my lamp addiction came in handy!

Thanks for the kind wishes on my traveling post!

Hi Kathy,
I'm so glad to see that everything has arrived.
You are going to be so busy for quite some time. I know what you mean about putting stuff up there on the ledge, it will be a dust collector for sure. Maybe as time goes by the house will speak to you and you'll know what to do.

Hi Kathy! Welcome to your new home! This brought back memories for me of two years ago this month when I moved.

Under counter lights are wonderful! This is the first house I had them in and they really help. Enjoy unpacking and setting up your new home.
Hugs,
Penny

Whoo-hoo, you're in your new home! How exciting!!!! I have a small ledge like that over our front door and it does collect DUST!!! I have some faux greenery but you know what I instantly thought of, suitcases, although perhaps not in the kitchen LOL

I know you have no internet but when you get a chance check out my new inspiration board I made out of a windowframe!!

O'Kathy, I feel for you with all those boxes but I have no doubt that you will have your new place looking gorgeous in no time at all. I like your idea of faux greenery on top of the cabinets.

Have a wonderful day,
Gail

Wow, I remember the feeling the first few days you move into a new place when it looks like the boxes are taking over. I wouldn't limit yourself to just faux greenery on top. I would decorate it like you would a mantle but with larger scale items to draw your eye up. Extra lighting will definitely help the overall look as well. Can't wait to see how it all turns out.

Kathy, I am so glad you are there safe and sound!! You are officially an Ohio-an! lol I know it seems overwhelming now, but everything will fall into place and it will be fabulous!!

I have always been stumped on what to put over cabinets myself. I have seen large platters and urns grouped together with greenery that I thought was pretty....

Can't wait to see more photos. LOVE the new place :)

Hey, Kathy--too funny--you've got boxes all over yet you're worrying about decorating! What an exciting time to organize a new home. Maybe something large and flat--an oversized plate/tray on your ledge so the dust "slides" off? Ha!

I saw a photo once where someone had lined a room with low planters planted with plain old grass. That would look cool on your shelves. Maybe long, skinny, white rectangular plates with some dirt and grass seed? That may be hard to water way up high though. Still, I agree that something green would be nice to break up the white.

I am so glad you are in Ohio! I hope all went well with your move! Your Living Room is taking shape already! I am so excited for you! I am not sure about the ledge- interesting. Do you like architectural elements for it? Just a thought.

Oh, I've moved sooooo many times I can almost feel being overwhelmed just from looking at the photos. Great space to work with and as you live with the kitchen you'll "see" what you want to do with the space above the cabinets. I have the same space and fill it with interesting stuff. Good luck with your move and it's always fun to settle into a new town.

I actually like the baskets up there. I just put some up on my cabinets since I didn't want to put back all of the vintage tins and such we originally had up there.

And what are you doing reading this? Get back to unpacking - ha!

That's about the worst task lighting I've ever seen. They're more like spot lights. It looks like you REALLY have your work cut out for you with the unpacking and putting your beautiful home back together.

Kathy, I know you have your work cut out...moving is such a huge job. Thanks for checking in and keeping us posted. Are you excited? Or just feeling overwhelmed right now? Take lots of breaks...don't do like me and work until 3 in morning. :) Can't wait to see more of your new home!

Kathy, welcome to Ohio, I'm just north of you ....GO BLUE! Call me crazy, but I see the wall above the ledge and the back wall over the cabinets...as a Tuscan/or French countryside landscape...as if there are windows above your cabinets that open onto a vineyard and hills beyond.....either a painted mural (see if you can find an artist through a local college) or wallpaper (you can get some great ones online)..then on the ledge one grouping, i.e. a large vase, wine box and some greenery-to keep the dusting to a minimum, then you can change the greenery out for the seasons. Is there anyway you can faux the cabinet hardware to look like worn wood?
Just what I see when I look at your kitchen.

Kathy, You are going to be one busy lady. For the ledge I would stick with one or two large pieces. Anything little will be lost up there. Maybe a large French market basket or a vintage shutter turned sideways. Best of luck and have fun.
Hugs,
Sherry

I agree with Sherry! Something HUGE goes up there. I have an iron gate and some honkin' candlesticks, remember?:

That outta be fun figuring THAT out. But, I love your darling home!!!
Especially the sun room!
