Looking For Kitchen Cabinet Inspiration

kitchen ideas

{Source: Unknown}

It turns out that we will be staying in our house for about another two years.  This means that maybe, just maybe, I can do some of the things I’ve admired and would like to do in our house.  First thing on the list is painting our cabinets.  I love the white glazed look of that island above.

I’m hoping if I can get enough inspiration pictures together to show hubby, he will get on board with this project.   These are what I have found so far.  I think going this way with color will work with our existing tile backsplash and Corian countertops.

So, that’s what I got!  Of course, any blogs that I have seen this type of thing on have gone right out of my mind at this point, so if you know of a specific link to a website or have done this to your own cabinets, I’d love to see it.  I’d also like to know if you were happy with the outcome if you did do your cabinets this way.

Oh ~ this is our kitchen currently.  Oak cabinets with tan tile backsplash, and tan fleck-y Corian countertops.

I totally agree with you. Find a way to convince your hubby that doing so will update your current kitchen (and it indeed will), thereby making it more attractive to perspective buyers in the future.

Hi Kathy, si this is the look I set out thinking I would do, but when it was time to start glazing I decided no to, I have glazed plenty of other thing and that is the easy part. I will tell you it took days and days of sanding, I know their are people who don't sand, but after consulting many professionals we were convinced that to do a good job you had to sand. It wasn't brain surgery hard, just time consuming hard. If you have any questions feel free to email me.

Your cabinets are very similiar to ours. I LOVE the french cream color on cabinets with a little brown in the crevices. I think they would look wonderful in your kithen.

I would LOVE to do that in ours but my hubby says "we don't have that style of house" which I think he's right but that doesn't mean I don't want them, LOL Although I think if we did something like that it would mean some major changes as I don't think it would look good with our tile . . . so maybe hubby is right . . .

I love all of your inspiration photos and the creamy white will look just gorgeous. I had a carpenter add a crown molding to ours in our old house and it also updated them about a million percent. If you're going to paint, that would really give the cabinets an extra edge. I can't wait to see what you do. Hugs, Marty. PS I am going to take over Table Top Tuesday from Barb since her business is so busy. I so hope you will join in the fun.

Seems like Susie Harris did that to her cabinets...you may ask her advice. I need to do something to mine. Anything would be better than what's on it now! : )

I had my own decorative painting business in Jackson for 10 years but when we moved to AL, I started to work for Fauxbiz, a gorgeous teaching studio. (our clientele was high end and the economy killed that for the owner...sadyly she had to close her incredible store - but we still faux on the side!) I have done soooo many glazed cabinets!!!!

Don't I wish I lived close to you and I would come and help you.

I love, and will always love a softly glazed, cream colored cabinet.
When we built this house, my plans were to glaze my kitchen cabinets, but I got as far as distressing the edges and never glazed them because I loved them without the glaze too, plus it saved me a ton of time!
If you want to see them, I can e-mail you a picture.

I really don't think you can go wrong with this finish.

Hey Kathy, if you head over to houzz.com, you'll find a zazillion beautiful inspiration pics. Many of the popular women in bloglabd have their houses on there as well, so you don't have to go searching through blogs.

I'm with you - I love LOVE love that style. My cabinets look similar to yours. I have such a hard time committing to changing them but it will happen either sanding and restaining or painting. However, my husband is the cook and I really fear white. He loves to cook because he doesn't "see" splattered spaghetti sauce or crumbs/etc. Ugh. lol

Can't wait to see what you decide!

Kathy, I remembered this girl from RMS. She gave a whole turorial on glazing cabinets. And she's still there!!

I had my cabinets painted about a year ago. Thrilled with the results, completely changed the way I felt about this part of my house. My husband was supportive of my plans but unsure of the outcome, while everyone else thought I had lost my mind. They now all love the outcome.

The key, I think, is to have them sprayed, after sanding and priming. It was a complete mess, but worth it. While not cheap, it is inexpensive compared to replacing the cabinetry.

Good luck. And I do think you will benefit when you do go to sell, if you work with what you have. If the kitchen looks updated and fresh buyers will see it as a space they will not have to work on themselves. Janell

That will be fun to see the changes! I like the cream island in that first photo!

There seems to be a lot of empathy for your dilemma of convincing the hubby! :-) What is it with guys and a fear of painting stained wood? I agree that they would look fabulous painted, and I'm thinking your idea of providing him with as many examples of people who have done it and resources for how it can be done is the best route. Best of luck! It will be fun to see the transformation.

I am TOTALLY on board with painting the cabinets! It's the #1 thing on my list for things to get done this summer. Keep us posted with pictures etc... if you decide to do this. I think they'll look amazing!!!

We had someone repaint our cabinets in our last home. They went from exactly what you have to a creamy white! It was the best thing we ever did...and we had only wished we would've done it sooner. Good Luck!

I love the pictures/ ideas you have chosen! I combined the oak and painted/glazed cabinets in my new kitchen and absolutely love the finished product!!! I recommend it! We also took it a step farther and requested distressing as well. As a mom to 3 boys and a lover of my kitchen, I knew the distressing would come sooner or later. Now as the scrapes and chips occur they just blend in to the timeless beauty:-)
