I hit an estate sale a couple of weeks ago and one of the things I picked up was this painting for $15.00. I really thought I’d just get it for the frame, but then figured I might as well take advantage of the canvas and make it into a chalkboard.
I had some Chalkboard spray paint here already and, after taping off the frame portion, got to spraying. Here it is after one coat. I’m figuring it is going to need at least three.
After two coats, I couldn’t see any of the original painting peeking through. Just to make sure, I did do a third spray coat.
I let it sit for a couple of days and then I seasoned it by rubbing the side of a piece of chalk all over the chalkboard.
This keeps it from having your previous writings in the background. I left the frame the original gold color.
I moved a few things out of the way and put it in my dining room for a glamour shot.

Hi Kathy, Your chalkboard turned out fabulous. I love it. I am in the process of doing the same thing, only my paint is brush on. The priming of the board with the chalk really helps too.

Looks great, Kathy! I've found that the uglier the picture, the better the price, which makes for a great deal on the frame. Even better if you can repurpose the picture as well. :)
