Laser Cut Chandelier

A few months ago I won a giveaway at Fabulous Fun Finds of this laser cut “Michelle” chandelier from www.itagstudios.com.

It arrives flat and unfinished.  I finally opened it up and decided to get started painting it.  I opted for black spray paint since I ran out of Heirloom White {How did that happen?}.  This is what it could look like if you went with white and decorated it with some bling.

Here we are in the initial phase of spraying with a first light coat.

I’m fast forwarding to the completion of the painting because I think you already know what that process is all about.  I had received these great chandelier crystals from Sonya at Beyond The Screen Door in a swap.  

I will need to search out some other pieces to use to bling this baby up! 

I think this will be a perfect piece to use for the Mad Hatter Tea Party I will be participating in next month over at A Fanciful Twist!

I Found My Frames!

It’s really sad what passes for excitement for me these days.  The other night I made my 100th trip to our small storage basement hoping that whatever box I packed my cream-colored-distressed-vintage-looking frames in would just present itself to me and say, “Here we are!”.   Basically, that’s just what happened!  I saw some bins that were not stacked as they had been and I opened the closest one.  Don’t you know there was a box inside labeled “White Distressed Frames ~ Fragile”! 

I bought these so long ago {about 10 years} off of eBay just waiting for that perfect thing to be framed in them.  The detail is wonderful and I remember they were quite a bargain.

I wanted to do something to work with the tea party theme for the table I painted up for my granddaughter.  I printed out these pictures that I saved from The Graphics Fairy.

Karen offered them in all four colors!  I printed them on ivory colored card stock and I printed two in mirror image so that they would face the other way. 

Now I just need something for the center.  I had gotten this large frame at Goodwill a few months ago and I just ordered a print for it the other night that I think will work well to tie it all together. 

I have plans to join in on the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at A Fanciful Twist in June, so I’m sure this will all come in handy!

Restore Cabinet Sample #2

I shared my first project with the cabinet samples I picked up at the Restore here.  As a quick refresher, these are what they look like.

For this second project, I used the one you see to the right with the hole in it.  With my daughter and son-in-law’s first anniversary coming up next month, and my daughter liking the pieces I was putting together for this one, I decided to make this for them as an anniversary gift.

I put one of the buttons you see right in the hole with hot glue.  The other button I snipped off the back and hot glued that in place, too.

I used a script scrapbook paper, applied with Mod Podge {with a coat on top}.  I also wanted to use this label plate and word key.  Since it was going to be a gift, I decided to monogram it for them and found I had left over shower invitations that I made for my daughter’s baby shower last year.  I cut the monogram “P” from that and used it here in the label plate.

The key says “Heart” and I hot glued that on underneath it.  I had this Anniversary tag for a couple of years now, having found it in a box of stuff in the back of Michael's in their clearance area.  You can’t go wrong for $.28!

I just hung the Anniversary tag off one of the buttons in case my daughter wants to remove it.  I’ll get a nice little stand for it, so this way they can place it on a table, shelf or their dresser.  For these pictures I just used an extra one I had around.

I love the way the swirls in the font work so well with the design of the label plate and how it has a vintage old-fashioned look to it.

You’ll notice in the top picture that I bought three cabinet samples.  Well, the third one was an epic fail trying a new technique I had read about.  It was not salvageable in any way, shape or form, so it did go in the garbage.  Thankfully, these pieces were only $.50 each, so it’s not a major loss!

Restore Cabinet Sample #1

When I went to our local restore for the first time I got a regular size cabinet door and three cabinet door samples.  They were $.50 a piece for the samples and I figured I could come up with some simple projects to use them for.

I wanted to do something quick and easy after work one evening and pulled out my selection of rub-ons.  I took the sample that had two sections {no hole} and applied some of the rub-ons in various spots.

This is four separate rub-ons.  I put it on my harlequin table for pictures, as it is the only place I seemed to have good enough light.  It’s been raining here all week!

Simple, cute and it made me feel like I created something!

Chair Before & After

You might remember the chair I found at a local thrift store here and how I just fell in love with the shape and detail.  I got started on it last weekend.  There are so many ways you could go in your color choice with a chair like this.  Be forewarned, this is a long post with a lot of pictures!

I went a somewhat neutral route so that I could fit it in anywhere in my house.  I first removed the fabric from the back and removed the seat to remove that fabric.  Total grossness! 

I cleaned it before priming it.  This is what the rag looked like after wiping it down.   Gross to the nth power!

I decided to use a paint brush on the chair, as opposed to spray paint, because I figured I’d have more control over any drips, especially in the detailing.  After the primer dried I painted it with two coats of Heirloom White.  I followed that up with a quick spray of Heirloom White to get anything I might have missed with the brush. 

While waiting for the paint to dry I got some batting and did a quick staple around the seat with it.  Then I cut my fabric.  I had ordered this script fabric some time ago and thought I might use this on it, but the font is too big for the size of the chair.

So I went looking for something on fabric.com that would work better and found this P Kaufman fabric, which comes in two other color ways. This is the Pewter.  It was a little bit more than I would normally spend, but I only got a yard so I figured it was worth it.

While I love the script fabrics that are out there, it seems like everyone has it now and I wanted something a little different.  I thought the monogram theme with the script would give me the look I was going for. 

I got lucky that there was a large “K” in an area that I could use on the heart shaped seat back.  The seat got some batting {where there was none before} and then the fabric stapled on top of that.

I glued a chocolate brown trim {that I already had}around the back fabric because the fabric had to be stapled on the face of the chair.  It had a cording on it originally {vinyl} and was tacked with upholstery tacks in place.  Since the back  part was not removable a cording was necessary to hide the staples.

Before I attached the fabric, I mixed up some chocolate brown craft paint with water to apply as a glaze.  I think it shows off the detailing much better than if I had left it white.  Then, I did a quick spray of polyurethane spray in a satin finish and did the fabric once that dried.  I’m not totally thrilled with the way the trim looks, so I might see if I can find a gray cording.

 

I really love this fabric!

I put it in my living room, where it may or may not stay.  Pay no attention to my laptop power cord there on the floor.

Chair Sneak Peek

I’ve been working on my thrift store chair and thought I’d share a sneak peek.

I should have the post up by Sunday night, in time to join in on some linky parties.

On a side note, I ordered some of that newfangled chalk paint that is out and about in blogland and I plan on using that on the headboard I found at the same thrift store, as well as on my rescued dresser.  Fingers crossed it comes by the end of the week so I can get started on it this weekend.

Combo Post

Just a couple of things to post that don’t really warrant their own separate posts, so I thought I’d just combine them into one.

I found this great cake stand on the One Kings Lane website.  It was $29.00 {not including tax and shipping}.  I think this is the first time I ever ordered from them.  It took awhile to get, but I love it.  Unfortunately, I have no idea what I’m going to put in it or where it will go at the present time {although somewhere in my kitchen or dining room would probably be the obvious choice}.  I’ll have to think on that.  Suggestions are welcome!

I recently added this tray to my Etsy shop.  A little bit of toile with some Heirloom White.  The paint actually matches the creamy white in the toile paper.  It’s a nice little wood tray and OOAK.

Wood Candleholder Redo

Penny from The Comforts of Home posted this inspiration picture from Pottery Barn while looking to spruce up her mantel.

I noticed that the candleholder to the right reminded me of a candleholder that I have and had put away.   I’m pretty sure it’s because I wasn’t feeling the green and pink in the detailing anymore.

While I was Heirloom White spray painting crazy recently, I gave it a couple of coats.

Then added some light gray to the main details to bring them out.  Very subtle.

With a darker gray added to the “rings” in each section.

Here is a close up of the bottom section.  I think you can see the difference in color better in this shot.

A little something missing though.  The top has a hole in it that would hold a taper candle, but I would just sit a pillar candle on the top anyway. 

I found a finial I had in my craft closet and decided to add that.

It’s a little too bright for me so I mixed up some chocolate brown craft paint with some water and put it on with a sponge brush.    {The next pictures were taken on a cloudy, rainy day, so I apologize for the dim lighting}.  Before:

I waited from 3-5 minutes and wiped it off with a paper towel.  The picture below is where I put it on the base and wiped it off.

This picture shows it slathered on before wiping off, in the middle section.

After:

I think it toned it down just enough for me.

Not sure where I’m putting it yet.  I’ve been walking around the house with it and trying out spots.  I think my family is afraid it’s a weapon of some sort, so I hope to find a place to set it down soon!
