Fairy Tea Time Bow Holder

SONY DSC

Recently, my son-in-law painted an upstairs bathroom for my granddaughter from blue to pink.  When I saw this wallpaper at the Brewster Home Fashions website, I knew it would be perfect for a couple of projects to help decorate it.  This is another one of the wallpaper samples I got from Brewster.

The first thing I decided to make was a bow holder.  My granddaughter is more amenable to wearing them these days, so she has quite a few now.  I think having one neat place to keep them all will be helpful.  I started out with a wood plaque from Michael’s and painted the edging with a mix of two different brand name chalk paints in pink.  I had mixed them together to make up enough for another project I had done and had just enough left over for this project.

SONY DSC

I traced out the front of the plaque on the back of the wallpaper.  I used Mod Podge to apply the wallpaper to the plaque.  Once it dried, I applied one coat to the top.

SONY DSC

Once that all dried, I chose my ribbon and cut it to length.  I stapled it to the front of the board.

SONY DSC

To cover the staples, I picked up a package of three different shades of pink flower buttons.  I didn’t realize it until I got home, but the flowers actually fit in with the flowers in the image on the wallpaper.  I clipped of the backs and hot glued them in place over the staples.

SONY DSC

Done and ready to hold some bows!

The final addition of a sawtooth hanger to the back and it is good to go, providing some wall décor as well as being functional.

One For Here, One For There . . .

SONY DSC

I’ve been alternating sewing and making things for my Etsy, my booth, and the Dickens Festival gift shop.  The most recent items I finished ~ two pillows.  This owl one for the booth.

SONY DSC

I already showed you the Jane Austen silhouette pillow that has been put aside for the Dickens Festival in December.

SONY DSC

I also made a few pumpkins on stands for my booth.  You might remember that I made one of these for myself last year using a short wood candlestick from the craft store, and a pumpkin and witch hats from the dollar store.  You can see that post here.  The Halloween hair elastic came from Hobby Lobby.

Okay. Breaks over! Back to work!

Jane Austen Silhouette Pillow

I found a round/oval crochet doily at a yard sale recently that had a linen insert in the middle.  It reminded me of a cameo so I knew I wanted to do something with a silhouette image.  I decided to go with the Jane Austen silhouette since it is easily available online and did an iron on transfer onto the linen insert.

SONY DSC

I am using dropcloth for the pillow cover and sewed the doily onto the center of the pillow, tacking down some of the outer crochet pieces that would tend to flop over.

SONY DSC

I played around with the stitch pattern on my sewing machine and used a curvy wave pattern to sew the pillow together.

SONY DSC

I’m really pleased with the way it turned out.  This is going on the side to come with me to the Dickens Festival gift shop in December.

SONY DSC

I’m going to tell you something and I hope you won’t laugh.  I will be 50 next month and I never read any of the Jane Austen books until two weeks ago!  I managed to catch “Emma” on Masterpiece Classic recently and loved it.

SONY DSC

I have also seen Pride and Prejudice {the Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen version}, which I also loved.  I downloaded “Emma” to my kindle for free and read it right after I saw it on Masterpiece Classic.  Mansfield Park is waiting on the kindle to be read next!

Magnetic Makeup Holder

2013 09 16_2506

Recently, Brewster Home Fashions generously sent me some sample wallpapers from their collections to utilize in some projects.  I’ve got lots of ideas for these samples and today I’d like to share one of those projects with you.

2013 08 16_2219

You might recall I found this picture at a garage {or estate} sale not too long ago and I really just bought it for the frame.  I removed the print and glass, and painted the frame with Old White Chalk paint.  I then added a glaze to it to pick up on the decorative detailing with some brown craft paint.  I chose the Belle Maison Flourish Blue Cameo Fleur sample paper that I received from Brewster and attached that to some foam core that I cut to the size of the opening {I used the cardboard backing as a template}.

I also picked up this screening, which apparently has a lot of uses.

2013 09 12_2444

I used the glass from the picture to measure for the screening size needed.  I had to get my husband’s help with the screening because it was a bit difficult to cut.  He had to use his Rotozip tool.

SONY DSC

The great thing about this screening is that it is magnetic, so this project can be used as a memo board, or

SONY DSC

To hold jewelry, or

SONY DSC

in this case, to hold makeup!

2013 09 16_2508

Some magnets attached to the makeup makes it easy.  This will be going home with my daughter to hang in her bathroom, and will make for an easy and attractive way for her to get at her makeup easily.

Gross Anatomy {Or A Halloween Pillow}

SONY DSC

I’ve been wanting to make a pillow for my son and finally got to it the other day.  The only thing I had to buy was the pillow form and I used a 12 x 16 for this one.  I decided to use some left over drop cloth material for this pillow and two images that I had saved from Karen at The Graphics Fairy.

154-SkullMustacheCrow

As many of you know, my son graduated from college in June with a degree in Athletic Training.  He is now in Pennsylvania pursuing his Masters in Athletic Training.  One of the classes he had to take was Gross Anatomy.  When he explained the class to me, I had to give him a lot of credit for dealing with that.  Anyway, I thought this pillow would be fun to help commemorate that class for him {although, I’m sure he will never forget it!}.

SONY DSC

I was able to use a portion of the drop cloth that was hemmed, but for the other sides that were not, after I ironed on the images, I turned over the seams and ironed them.  Then I sewed those on the machine with white thread.

SONY DSC

I wanted to put this pillow together with right sides facing out so I chose a black thread to sew it up.  I tried to take a close up shot of the stitch pattern I chose.  I thought it looked like a heart rate that you might see on a monitor.  I know, it is sad how I amuse myself {or worrying}.

SONY DSC

I like how the black thread gives some interest to the pillow as opposed to if I had just used white thread.

SONY DSC

Typical for my pillows in recent years, it is reversible so either side can really be considered the “front”.  He can flip it to suit his mood.  Because of the images, it can also be considered a Halloween pillow!
