Just A Couple Of Frames

SONY DSC

Two frames I found at Goodwill got a makeover.

I forgot to take a picture of the second one.  That one was all gold {very bright} and it got a coat of Antoinette chalk paint and then a light brushing across the detailed front.  This allowed the gold to show through and give it kind of a gilded look.

I added a scrap of toile fabric I had to the insert so this way it would not just be an empty frame.

The larger frame got a coat of Vintage White craft paint just to shabby it up a little.

For this one I printed out a graphic I had saved on my computer and inserted that in the frame.

Quick and easy makeovers for a couple of thrift store frames.  They are on their way to the booth!

Guest Post ~ Kristen From Ella Claire

Welcome! Up for you today, I have a guest post from a new {to me} bloggy friend, Kristen from Ella Claire!  I only came across Kristen’s blog within the past few months and have been smitten by what she’s accomplished in her beautiful home, as well as her lovely little daughter. Now, for your reading pleasure, I present Kristen!

Hello, my name is Kristen and I blog over at Ella Claire. I am so excited to be here guest posting today! Thank you so much Kathy for having me.

I am so inspired by vintage charm, and a lot of what I share on my blog reflects that. I love to decorate, makeover furniture, throw parties, and anything DIY. Today, I thought I would share how I make little treat bags for parties!

First, gather some old book pages. Try to find some that are fairly sturdy. For mine, I used pages out of a vintage German dictionary I had on hand.

Next, fold your pages in half.

And then use your sewing machine to sew the edges. I used the outside of my foot for a guide. {please excuse my un-manicured fingers. I have been working in the yard :)}

Then fill with your treats. I used some clearance Easter candy I had on hand.
Super easy!

I think they add a little charm, don't you?
I also made some similar ones out of disposable placemats {here} to hold chips for my little one's shabby chic garden birthday party. They were super easy and fun.

Thank you, again, for letting me visit Kathy! :)

What a creative way to make treat bags for a party!  Please visit Kristen’s blog for some other wonderful ideas and to see her lovely home.  Thank you so much, Kristen!

Guest Post ~ Manuela From A Cultivated Nest

While I am enjoying some time away in sunny San Diego, California, my good friend, Manuela, from A Cultivated Nest, was kind enough to do this guest post for me so that I didn’t leave you with nothing this week.  Take it away, Manuela!

Easy Mirror Project For The Garden

Hi everyone! I just want to say a big thank you to Kathy for having me today!I'm Manuela and I blog over at A Cultivated Nest. I'm so thrilled to be sharing a quick and easy project with you today.

image
I've used mirrors in my garden for years and years. I think they're great for expanding and reflecting the view and adding just a bit of whimsy in the garden.

image
Here's how I made this frosted mirror for my garden.

All you need for this project is an old mirror, stencil(s) of your choice, glass frosting spray, and stencil adhesive. Be sure to do this project in a well ventilated area.

image

I've used all kinds of mirrors in my garden - wood framed, metal, plastic - whatever I've found at the thrift store. I would say the plastic ones last the longest. The wood framed ones last for several years before the wood starts detaching from the mirror (I live in Atlanta - mirrors may last longer or not as long depending on your climate).

image

1. Clean your mirror (my mirror popped out when I did that!! - so I went with it - but you can do this project with the mirror still in the frame).
2. Spray the back of your stencil with stencil adhesive
3. Lay your stencil on your mirror and make sure it's as flat as can be. Cover any areas you do not want to frost.
4. Lightly spray your glass frosting spray over your stencil in a sweeping motion. Apply in thin coats. Two passes was all I did for my mirror.
5. Remove your stencil. You can clean up any over spray with a bit of paint thinner – also rubbing alcohol on a Q-Tip or rag works as long as you do it right away before the frosting dries.
6.The frosted areas should be dry to the touch in about 15-30 minutes. Let it cure for about 7 days before placing outside.

Even though Krylon Glass Frosting spray is water resistant, I would recommend placing your frosted mirror in a somewhat protected area.

Adding a design to your mirror will help keep the birds from flying into it!
Although I did this project for my garden you can certainly do this on a mirror that you use inside your home!

Thank you, Manuela! What a great project! Your roses are gorgeous, too!

From Plain Jane To French Flair

2013 04 08_0943

I found this very plain wood box at Salvation Army.  It looks almost like it could have been something made in a shop class in school.

I thought this would be a good candidate for a makeover.  I started out by painting it with Provence chalk paint.  I added a No. 7 stencil to both sides, along with a couple of lines using flat white latex paint.

On each end piece I added a fleur de lis.

I used a combination of clear and dark wax to finish it off.  I like the way the dark wax settled into the dings.

You will probably laugh at me, but I was really proud of myself for figuring out how to alter this image to use as tags for my booth. I’ve decided to call it Shabby Paris Market and my booth number is 51.  In the left corner I also added the name and location of the antique mall.  I am computer graphically challenged so this was a real accomplishment for me!

I’m going to tack this footstool onto this post, too, since I forgot to take a before picture.  It was originally a natural pine top with the white legs.

I just painted the top black and added the French Market stencil.

Two more little pieces for my booth!  These little projects are quick and easy, but I need to get some furniture going!

California Here I Come!

San Diego to be exact! My first trip ever to California. We’ll be there for five days and I’ve got a couple of bloggy friends helping out with guest posts {plus a few of my own will pop up} while I’m gone.

Since this trip is related to my husband’s work, we will be doing some scheduled things, but I hope to be able to get out on my own and check out some shopping in the area.  I tried to do a little research beforehand on what is in the area near the hotel.  I’ve got my camera packed and hope to get some pictures to share with you.  I’ve read that San Diego has THE nicest weather anywhere in the U.S.

While I’m not thrilled about the plane ride, I am very excited to be going.  See you when I get back!
