Chair Before & After

You might remember the chair I found at a local thrift store here and how I just fell in love with the shape and detail.  I got started on it last weekend.  There are so many ways you could go in your color choice with a chair like this.  Be forewarned, this is a long post with a lot of pictures!

I went a somewhat neutral route so that I could fit it in anywhere in my house.  I first removed the fabric from the back and removed the seat to remove that fabric.  Total grossness! 

I cleaned it before priming it.  This is what the rag looked like after wiping it down.   Gross to the nth power!

I decided to use a paint brush on the chair, as opposed to spray paint, because I figured I’d have more control over any drips, especially in the detailing.  After the primer dried I painted it with two coats of Heirloom White.  I followed that up with a quick spray of Heirloom White to get anything I might have missed with the brush. 

While waiting for the paint to dry I got some batting and did a quick staple around the seat with it.  Then I cut my fabric.  I had ordered this script fabric some time ago and thought I might use this on it, but the font is too big for the size of the chair.

So I went looking for something on fabric.com that would work better and found this P Kaufman fabric, which comes in two other color ways. This is the Pewter.  It was a little bit more than I would normally spend, but I only got a yard so I figured it was worth it.

While I love the script fabrics that are out there, it seems like everyone has it now and I wanted something a little different.  I thought the monogram theme with the script would give me the look I was going for. 

I got lucky that there was a large “K” in an area that I could use on the heart shaped seat back.  The seat got some batting {where there was none before} and then the fabric stapled on top of that.

I glued a chocolate brown trim {that I already had}around the back fabric because the fabric had to be stapled on the face of the chair.  It had a cording on it originally {vinyl} and was tacked with upholstery tacks in place.  Since the back  part was not removable a cording was necessary to hide the staples.

Before I attached the fabric, I mixed up some chocolate brown craft paint with water to apply as a glaze.  I think it shows off the detailing much better than if I had left it white.  Then, I did a quick spray of polyurethane spray in a satin finish and did the fabric once that dried.  I’m not totally thrilled with the way the trim looks, so I might see if I can find a gray cording.

 

I really love this fabric!

I put it in my living room, where it may or may not stay.  Pay no attention to my laptop power cord there on the floor.
